LITTLE SISTERS OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE. - Founded in 1899 in Alessandria by Teresa Grillo-Michel, moved by a visit to the Little House of St. G. B. Cottolengo in Turin.

She then founded in imitation of it, in Alessandria, the "Piccolo Ricovero," whose special purpose was material and spiritual assistance to orphans and abandoned girls, to the mentally deficient, to epileptics, to the aged unfit for work, to the incurably ill who cannot be admitted to institutions of public charity; the assistance of the sick at home and in hospitals; the Christian education of children in nursery schools, and of young girls in workshops and Sunday oratories. Overcoming many difficulties, the new Congregation developed especially in Latin America, Brazil and Argentina. On July 5, 1935 it obtained the decree of praise and temporary approval, and on June 8, 1942 the definitive approval of its Constitutions. At present the Institute has 25 houses in Italy, 8 in Argentina, 31 in Brazil, with 516 sisters.
