REVUE MABILLON. - A quarterly review, named after the Maurist Jean Mabillon, founded in 1905 and directed by J.-M. Besse (v.) of the Abbey of St. Martin of Ligugé (Vienne).

During the exile that followed the suppression of the religious congregations in France (1901), the editorial office was located in Belgium at Chevetogne. After the return to France and the death of d. Besse, the review was continued by the Benedictines of the Abbey of Ligugé.

There have appeared, with the sole interruption of 1914-20, 41 vols. (166 issues) in 3 series (vols. 1-10 [1905-20]; 11-25 [1921-35]; 26-41 [1936-51]). Together with the review is published the collection Archives de la France monastique, of which more than 40 vols. have appeared, some of which continue the monastic works and studies of the French Maurist Benedictines, interrupted by the French Revolution. The review is the organ for studies in monastic history, liturgy, archaeology, etc. From the 3rd series the program was broadened to include also the origins of monastic life and of the Middle Ages. In 1924, in order to give greater development to these studies, the "Société Mabillon pour le développement des études d'histoire monastique en France" was established.
