It has an area of 27,437.30 sq km with a population of 950,000 inhabitants, of whom 900,000 are Catholic; it comprises 75 parishes with 113 diocesan priests and 173 regular clergy; it has 1 seminary, 29 male religious communities and 71 female (Ann. Pont. 1952, p. 341).
The diocese was created by Pius XI with the apostolic constitution *Nobilis Argentinae nationis* of 20 April 1934, by separating it from the diocese of Santa Fé, elevating the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the status of cathedral with the title of the Most Holy Rosary. It is a suffragan of Santa Fé.
