Sabinus, Saint, Martyr redirects here.

SAVINO, Saint, Martyr. - He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on December 30, but according to the Passio, supported by certain codices of the Hieronymian Martyrology, he died on the 7th of the same month.

His cult was very widespread in antiquity: his image is found in the mosaics of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, and from the letters of St. Gregory the Great it is gathered that his relics were much sought after. During the persecution of Diocletian, S. was arrested and brought before the tribunal of the governor Venustianus; the latter, after interrogating him and seeing him firm in the faith, had his hands cut off and shut him in prison. Entrusted therefore to the tribunus of Spoleto, he was subjected in that city to harsh torments, as a result of which he died. Over his tomb, two miles from Spoleto, a basilica arose. The Passio, highly fanciful and written in Rome between the end of the 5th century and the beginning of the 6th, makes him bishop of Spoleto, but this rank of his is not established.
