A city and diocese in the province of Quebec (Canada).
There are 80,078 Catholics. 112 diocesan priests, 19 regular priests, 9 minor seminaries, 142 brothers, and 445 religious sisters. Among the institutions are 42 parishes, 15 missions, the minor seminary, the normal school, the family institute, 6 hospitals, homes for the elderly, and orphanages.
The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution *Ad catholicum nomen* of June 23, 1951, by separating forty parishes from the dioceses of Montréal, Ottawa, and Mont-Laurier in the counties of Argenteuil, Deux-Montagnes, and Terrebonne, elevating to the rank and dignity of a cathedral the church dedicated to St. Jerome in the city of St-Jérôme, chosen as the episcopal see. The diocese is a suffragan of Montréal. The Minor Seminary of St. Teresa, founded in 1825, is considered in French Canada as one of the best institutions of classical education.
