There are 80,078 Catholics, 112 diocesan priests, 19 regular priests, 9 seminarians, 142 brothers, and 445 religious sisters. Its institutions include 42 parishes, 15 missions, 1 minor seminary, 1 normal school, 1 family institute, 6 hospitals, homes for the elderly, and orphanages.
The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XII through the apostolic constitution Ad catholicum nomen of 23 June 1951, by the detachment of forty parishes from the dioceses of Montréal, Ottawa, and Mont-Laurier in the counties of Argente, Deux-Montagnes, and Terrebonne, raising to the rank and dignity of a cathedral the church dedicated to St. Girolamo in the city of St-Jérôme, chosen as the episcopal seat. The diocese is suffragan to Montréal. The Minor Seminary of S. Teresa, founded in 1825, is regarded in French Canada as one of the best for classical education.
