SANUDO, MARINO THE YOUNGER. - Venetian historian, b. in Venice on 22 May 1466, d. there on 4 April 1536; he took part in various offices in the government of the Republic although without attaining high magistracies, and entered the Senate in 1498. He was several times savio agli ordini and in 1501 also quaestor at Verona.
More than a true historian, S. was a skilled compiler of documents and a chronicler. His major work, which serves admirably not only for the history of Venice but of all Italy, is composed of the famous Diarii which run from 1496 to 1533, long preserved with jealous care in the secret Library, published in 58 vols. with one of preface (Venice 1879-1902), in which very many documents are reproduced verbatim. The first work is his Itinerarium cum syndicis terrae firmae (Padua 1847 and 1881). From 1493 he composed the Vite dei Dogi (RIS, XXII, pp. 405-1252; in the 2nd ed. it is in part 4, edited by G. Monticchio); in these were included in part the Commentari della guerra di Ferrara (1482-84) (Venice 1829); his history of the Spedizione di Carlo VIII in Italia was published by R. Fulin in 1873. He also left a treatise De origine, vita et magistratibus urbis Venetae. A Sommario di storia veneziana remained in manuscript.
