SANUDO, MARINO il GIOVANE. - Venetian historian, b. in Venezia on 22 May 1466, d. there on 4 Apr. 1536; he held various offices in the government of the Republic, though without attaining the highest magistracies, and entered the Senate in 1498. He was several times Savio agli Ordini and in 1501 also quaestor at Verona.
More than a true historian, S. was a skilful compiler of documents and a chronicler. His greatest work, of remarkable usefulness not only for the history of Venezia but of all Italy, consists of the famous Diarii, covering the years 1496 to 1533, formerly kept with jealous care in the Biblioteca segreta, and published in 58 vols., with one volume of preface (Venezia 1879-1902), in which a very great number of documents are reproduced verbatim. His first work was an Itinerarium cum syndicis terrae firmae (Padova 1847 and 1881). From 1493 date the Vite dei Dogi (RIS, XXII, pp. 405-1252; in the 2nd ed. they appear in part 4, edited by G. Monticchio); these partly included the Commentari della guerra di Ferrara (1482-84) (Venezia 1829); his history of the Spedizione di Carlo VIII in Italia was published by R. Fulin in 1873. He also left a treatise De origine, vita et magistratibus urbis Venetae. A Sommario di storia veneziana remained in manuscript.
