SOFRONIO. – According to s. Girolamo (De vir. illustr., 134), a certain S. wrote in his youth Laudes Bethlehem; later, a book on the destruction of the temple of Serapis in Alexandria. In addition, he wrote on virginity and a life of the monk Ilarione.
He had translated the Psalms and the Prophets into Greek from the Latin translation of s. Girolamo. He was still alive in 392, the date of the composition of the De viris illustribus. Nothing of these works has been preserved. The hypothesis has been advanced that the Greek translations of the Vita di s. Ilarione and of the Vita di s. Malco by s. Girolamo were the work of S. This has nothing to do with another S., who in the 7th century translated the De viris illustribus of s. Girolamo.
