SOFRONIO

SOFRONIO. — According to St. Jerome (De vir. illustr., 134), a SOFRONIO wrote in his youth Laudes Bethlehem; later, a book on the destruction of the temple of Serapis in Alexandria. He also wrote on the true faith and a life of the monk Hilarion.

He had translated into Greek the Psalms and the Prophets in St. Jerome’s Latin version. He was still alive in 392, the date of the composition of the De viris illustribus. Nothing has survived of these works. The hypothesis has been advanced that the Greek translations of the Life of St. Hilarion and of St. Jerome’s St. Malchus were the work of this SOFRONIO. Nothing connects with this another SOFRONIO who, in the 7th century, translated St. Jerome’s De viris illustribus.
