SIRMOND, JACQUES. - Patrologist, b. at Riom (Puy-de-Dôme) on 12 Oct. 1559, d. at Paris on 7 Oct. 1651. Having entered the Society of Jesus in 1576, he taught literature and rhetoric at the Collège de Clermont (1581-90), where he had St. Francis de Sales as a pupil; then (1590-1608) he was secretary of the general Claudio Acquaviva; from 1617 rector of the Collège de Paris; from 1637 to 1643 confessor of Louis XII.

He distinguished himself in the field of patrology; he was, in fact, the editor of St. Fulgentius of Ruspe (Paris 1612), of Theodoret of Cyrrhus (ibid. 1642), of the Opuscoli of Eusebius Pamphilus (ibid. 1643), of the Praedestinatus (ibid. 1643) and of other authors and works. Important are his writing De duobus Dionysius, Parisiensi et Areopagita (ibid. 1641), his polemical work Historia poemitentiae publicae (ibid. 1651) and the collection Concilia antiqua Galliae (3 vols., ibid. 1629).
