Stutz, Ulrich

STUTZ, ULRICH. - Jurist, b. in Zurich on 5 May 1868, d. in Berlin on 6 July 1938.

He received his doctorate in law in 1892 at the University of Berlin; in 1893 he was extraordinary professor of German law and ecclesiastical law at the University of Basel, in 1896 at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, in 1904 at Bonn and finally in 1917 at Berlin. While he was at Freiburg he founded, in 1902, the renowned collection Kirchenrechtliche Abhandlungen, and at Bonn, in 1911, the Kanonistische Abteilung, of the Zeitschrift der Savigny-Stiftung für Rechtsgeschichte, while from as early as 1879 he was director of the Germanistische Abteilung.

He was a member of the most important scientific, historical and juridical academies. Although a fervent Protestant and an authoritative member of the General Synod of the Prussian Evangelical Church, he nurtured sincere tolerance and sympathy for the Catholic Church, whose history and institutions he studied with objectivity and appreciated. His scholarly output from 1887 to 1938 amounts to 1945 works (cf. the complete list in Zeitschr. d. Savigny-Stiftung [Kanon.
