STUTZ, Ulrich. Jurist, b. in Zurich on 5 May 1868, d. in Berlin on 6 July 1938.
He earned his doctorate in law in 1892 at the University of Berlin; in 1893 he became an extraordinary professor of German law and ecclesiastical law at the University of Basel, in 1896 at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, in 1904 at Bonn, and finally in 1917 at Berlin. While at Freiburg, in 1902 he founded the renowned series *Kirchenrechtliche Abhandlungen*, and at Bonn, in 1911, the *Kanonistische Abteilung* of the *Zeitschrift der Savigny-Stiftung für Rechtsgeschichte*, having directed the *Germanistische Abteilung* since 1879.
He was a member of the most important scientific, historical, and legal academies. Though a fervent Protestant and a leading member of the General Synod of the Prussian Evangelical Church, he maintained sincere tolerance and sympathy for the Catholic Church, whose history and institutions he studied with objectivity and appreciation. His scholarly output from 1887 to 1938 comprises 1,045 works (see complete list in *Zeitschr. d. Savigny-Stiftung* [Kanon.
