SANGUINETI. - Canonist, b. in Genoa on 12 Oct. 1829, d. in Rome on 27 Jan. 1893.

He entered the Society of Jesus on 23 Sept. 1847 and was prefect of studies at the American Seminary in Rome; then professor of ecclesiastical history and subsequently of canon law at the Roman College. He was a consultor of the commission charged with preparing the Vatican Council, at which he also served as a papal theologian. He then taught theology at Roehampton in England and, after some years, took up again the teaching of canon law at the Gregorian University and of ecclesiastical law at the Pontifical Academy of History and Philosophy. He was a consultor of various congregations.

Besides some small works of asceticism, history and sacred eloquence, he wrote various works of notable scientific importance: De sede Romana b. Petri Principis Apostolorum commentarius historicus criticus (Rome 1867); La Compagnia di Gesù e la sua legale esistenza nella Chiesa, ibid. 1882; and, more important than all, Iuris ecclesiastici privati Institutiones ad Decretalium enarrationem dispositae (ibid. 1884; new ed. 1890).
