Canonist, b. at Genova on 12 Oct. 1829, d. at Roma on 27 Jan. 1893.He entered the Society of Jesus on 23 Sept. 1847 and was prefect of studies at the American Seminary in Roma; subsequently professor of ecclesiastical history and later of canon law at the Collegio Romano. He was consultant to the commission charged with preparing the Vatican Council, at which he also served as papal theologian. He then taught theology at Roehampton in England and, after some years, resumed teaching canon law at the Gregorian University and ecclesiastical law at the Pont. Academy of History and Philosophy. He was consultant to various congregations.
Besides several minor works on asceticism, history, and sacred eloquence, he wrote various works of considerable scholarly importance: De sede Romana b. Petri Principis Apostolorum commentarius historicus criticus (Roma 1867); La Compagnia di Gesù e la sua legale esistenza nella Chiesa, ibid. 1882; and, most important of all, Iuris ecclesiastici privati Institutiones ad Decretalium enarrationem dispositae (ibid. 1884; new ed. 1890).
