SANGUINETI, SEBASTIANO. — Canonist, born in Genoa on 12 Oct. 1829, died in Rome on 27 Jan. 1893.
He entered the Society of Jesus on 23 Sept. 1847 and served as prefect of studies at the American Seminary in Rome; later he taught ecclesiastical history and subsequently canon law at the Collegio Romano. He was a consultor to the commission charged with preparing the Vatican Council, in which he also served as a pontifical theologian. He then taught theology at Roehampton in England, and after several years resumed teaching canon law at the Gregorian University and ecclesiastical law at the Pontifical Academy of History and Philosophy. He was a consultor to various congregations.
Besides some minor works on ascetics, history, and sacred eloquence, he wrote several works of notable scholarly importance: *De sede Romana b. Petri Principis Apostolorum commentarius historicus-criticus* (Rome 1867); *La Compagnia di Gesù e la sua legale esistenza nella Chiesa*, ibid. 1882; and, most important of all, *Iuris ecclesiastici privati Institutiones ad Decretalium enarrationem dispositae* (ibid. 1884; new ed. 1890).
