TARAMELLI, TORQUATO. - Geologist, b. in Bergamo on 15 Oct. 1845, d. in Pavia on 31 March 1922.
He was introduced to the study of geology by his teacher Stoppani. At the age of 21 he began his teaching career at the Technical Institute in Udine, where he left a rich mineralogical and paleontological collection; in 1875 he obtained the chair of geology at the University of Pavia, where he taught for 44 years. His studies mainly concerned the terrains of Veneto, Lombardy, the Emilian Apennines, and the Po Valley. He was a pioneer of modern views in the field of geomorphology and Quaternary glaciation. A fervent patriot and Garibaldian (he fought in 1866 with the 19th Volunteer Regiment in Trentino), he was a true master through his extensive and passionate scientific and teaching activity and through the example of rectitude and piety that he gave as a convinced and practicing Catholic.
