TARAMELLI, TORQUATO. - Geologist, b. at Bergamo on 15 Oct. 1845, d. at Pavia on 31 March 1922.

He was set on the study of geology by his teacher Stoppiani. At the age of 21 he began his career as a teacher at the Technical Institute of Udine, where he left a rich mineralogical and paleontological collection; in 1875 he obtained the chair of geology at the University of Pavia, where he taught for 44 years. His studies concern above all the terrains of the Veneto, of Lombardy, of the Emilian Apennines and of the Po Valley. He was a precursor of modern views in the field of geomorphology and Quaternary glaciation. A fervent patriot and Garibaldian (he fought in '66 with the 1st volunteer regiment in the Trentino), he was a true master for his vast and passionate scientific and didactic activity and for the example of uprightness and piety that he gave as a convinced and practicing Catholic.
