TARANCON, EMANUELE GIOACCHINO. — Cardinal, born in Covarrubias, diocese of Sigüenza, on 20 March 1782, died in Seville on 25 August 1862.

After holding the offices of professor of law and rector of the University of Valladolid, as well as counsellor of the Royal Academy of Mathematics and Noble Arts, he was appointed (1822) capitular vicar and later (1824) vicar general in the same diocese. Subsequently, he was deputy to the Cortes for the province of Soria (1835), senator and vice-president of the Senate (1836), and member, then president (1839), of the Commission that was to examine the affairs of Cuba. In 1841 he was appointed president of the Mount of Piety of Madrid, and three years later he was entrusted with the education of the future queen Isabella II and her sister, the infanta Luisa Fernanda; for their instruction he wrote an interesting treatise on ancient and modern history. Elected bishop of Zamora in 1847, he was transferred that same year to the see of Cordova, and during this period he took a prominent part in the negotiations for the conclusion of the Concordat between the

The Holy See and Spain, which was chiefly the work of the nuncio Brunelli, later a cardinal, and which was promulgated in 1851. Having been promoted to archbishop of Seville in 1850, he was created a cardinal by Pius IX in the Consistory of 15 March 1858, but was unable to travel to Rome to receive the galero.

Upon his death, the exceptionally rich Library, of particular interest for the sacred sciences and for the history of the Iberian Peninsula, was divided among the University of Valladolid and the Seminaries of Córdoba, Seville, and Valladolid.
