SCOTTI GALLARATI, FILIPPO. - Cardinal, b. in Milano on 25 Feb. 1747, d. at Gualtieri near Orvieto on 7 Oct. 1819.
Admitted by Pio VI to the prelature, he was apostolic protonotary, referendary of the Consulta, and inquisitor in Malta (1783). In 1792 he was elected titular archbishop of Side and apostolic nuncio in Firenze, and three years later in Venezia, where he was staying when the Conclave was held that elected Pio VII (1800). The new Pontiff immediately appointed him his master of the chamber; on 23 Feb. 1801 he was made cardinal, and in 1802 apostolic visitor of the hospital of S. Maria della Consolazione in Roma, where he worked strenuously to improve care for the sick. He was among the cardinals who refused to attend the marriage of Napoleone and Maria Luisa and was consequently exiled to Sedan, Charleville, and Tolone. After Pio VII returned to Roma, he became archpriest of the Liberian Basilica (1814) and prefect of the economy of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide (1817).
