SCOTTÌ GALLARATI, FILIPPO. - Cardinal, b. in Milan on 25 Feb. 1747, d. at Gualtieri near Orvieto on 7 Oct. 1819.

Admitted by Pius VI into the prelature, he was apostolic protonotary, ponens of the Consulta and inquisitor at Malta (1783). In 1792 he was elected titular archbishop of Side and apostolic nuncio at Florence, and three years later at Venice, where he was staying when the Conclave was held there from which Pius VII emerged elected (1800). The new Pontiff immediately appointed him his master of chamber; on 23 Feb. 1801 cardinal, in 1802 apostolic visitor of the hospital of S. Maria della Consolazione in Rome, where he worked hard to have care for the sick improved. He was among the cardinals who refused to attend the marriage of Napoleon to Marie Louise and was subsequently exiled to Sedan, Charleville, Toulon. After the return of Pius VII to Rome, he became archpriest of the Liberian Basilica (1814) and prefect of the economy of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide (1817).
