TOMMASO DI CAPUA. - A native of Capua, he was appointed Archbishop of Naples in 1215 and created Cardinal with the title of S. Sabina in 1216 (Eubel, I, pp. 4, 359). He died at Anagni on 22 August 1243.
Chancellor of the Roman Curia under Innocent III, he was probably also Major Penitentiary. Gregory IX entrusted him with several legations, including one to the Emperor Frederick II. He composed several hymns, antiphons, and sequences in honour of St Francis and the Virgin. His skill as an outstanding curial draughtsman is reflected in his *Ars dictandi* (ed. E. Heller, in *Sitzungsb. der Heidelb. Ak.*, 19 [1928–29], fasc. 4) and in the valuable formulary, still unpublished, known by the title *Summa dictaminis*.
