THOMAS OF CAPUA. - A native of Capua, he was appointed archbishop of Naples (1215) and cardinal with the title of St. Sabina (1216: Eubel, I, pp. 4, 359). He died at Anagni on 22 Aug. 1243.
Chancellor of the Curia under Innocent III, he was afterwards, probably, major penitentiary. Gregory IX entrusted him with various legations, including one to the emperor Frederick II. He left some hymns, antiphons and sequences in honor of St. Francis and of the Virgin. His experience as an excellent curial editor he passed on in the Ars dictandi (ed. E. Heller, in Sitzungsb. der Heidelb. Ak., 19 [1928-29], fasc. 4) and in the precious formulary, still unpublished, known by the title Summa dictaminis.
