UGO di BONNEVAUX, saint - Abbot, nephew of s. Ugo, bishop of Grenoble (d. 1132), son of Raimondo di Châteauneuf, b. at Châteauneuf d'Isère, near Valence, about 1120, d. abbot of Bonnevaux in 1194.
A cleric of the Church of Lyon, he entered the Order of Citeaux, probably at the abbey of Miroir in the diocese of Lyon. Tempted to return to the secular world, he was strengthened in his vocation by a letter from s. Bernardo (PL 182, 527-28). Abbot of Léonel near Valence in 1162 or 1163, he received his blessing from Alessandro III at Montpellier; then, as abbot of Bonnevaux, the mother abbey, in 1166, U. attended to the interests of his houses, which were enriched by donations, privileges, and exemption. Among other peace mediations, he intervened with Ponzio, bishop of Clermont, in the conflict between Barbarossa and Alessandro III, negotiating the Peace of Venice (1177), which put
an end to the schism of Ottaviano. On 3 Dec. 1221, Onorio III appointed a commission of inquiry with a view to his canonization. The Office of the Saint is found in the Breviary of Valence of 1473 and in the proper of 1884 of the same diocese, on 1 Apr. The relics were dispersed in the sack of Bonnevaux in 1576. The authorship of the first biblical concordances has wrongly been attributed to U. di B.
