UGO of BONNEVAUX, Saint - Abbot, nephew of St. Hugh, bishop of Grenoble (d. 1132), son of Raymond of Châteauneuf, b. at Châteauneuf d'Isère, near Valence, around 1120, d. abbot of Bonnevaux in 1194.
A cleric of the Church of Lyon, he entered the Order of Citeaux probably in the abbey of Miroir in the diocese of Lyon. Tempted to return to the world, he was strengthened in his vocation by a letter of St. Bernard (PL 182, 527-28). Abbot of Léonel near Valence in 1162 or 1163, he received the blessing from Alexander III at Montpellier; then abbot of Bonnevaux, the mother abbey, in 1166, U. took care of the interests of his houses, which were enriched by donations, privileges and exemption. Among other peace mediations, he intervened together with Pons, bishop of Clermont, in the conflict between Barbarossa and Alexander III, negotiating the Peace of Venice (1177) which put an end to the schism of Octavian. On Dec. 3, 1221, Honorius III appointed a commission of inquiry with a view to his canonization. The Office of the Saint is found in the Breviary of Valence of 1473 and in the proprio of 1884 of the same diocese, on the day April 1. The relics were dispersed in the sack of Bonnevaux of 1576. The authorship of the first biblical concordances has been wrongly attributed to U. of B.
