TRONCHI, BARTOLOMEO. - Jesuit, carver, b. at Brezzo (Florence) in 1529, d. at Rome on 23 Nov. 1604.

Having entered the Order in Rome in 1564, already an adult and skilled in his art, he spent the rest of his life passing from one church of the Jesuits to another, thus traveling through Italy and leaving everywhere a mark not easily forgotten with his tabernacles, crucifixes, coffered ceilings, and altar ornaments. Many of these works, however, were destroyed (e.g., the tabernacles of Siena and Nola, of the Gesù in Rome, of the Gesù in Palermo), but those of the Gesù in Perugia (with a crucifix and the coffered ceiling), of St. Giovannino in Florence, the wonder of the court and of foreigners, and the crucifix of the sacristy in the Gesù in Rome are still preserved. The artistic forms of T., of a refined and austere Tuscan taste, were not long in being replaced by other works more rich and sumptuous and less suited to the liturgical spirit.
