HUGH OF STRASBOURG (RIPELIN). - Theologian and poet of the 13th century. Little is known of his life; his name appears in documents of 1268 and 1296.

A Dominican in his homeland, he probably studied in Paris. He was prior and taught in his convent in Strasbourg. He was a disciple of St. Albert the Great, whose Neoplatonic orientation he followed. A Commentarium in IV libros Sententiarum, Sermones varii, Quodlibeta, and Quaestiones are attributed to him. Certainly his is the Compendium theologicae veritatis (Venice 1476), written ca. 1265, which for several centuries was the most widespread manual of scholastic theology; it had very many editions and already in the Middle Ages was translated into German and was attributed by some to St. Thomas, by others to St. Bonaventure or to Ulrich of Strasbourg or especially to St. Albert the Great, under whose name the first edition also appeared. - See plate LXX.
