UMANA. - Today a rural parish in the province of Ancona (Marche) and an ancient diocese, from a very remote age.

When the see of Recanati was suppressed in 1264, it was united to U. on 28 March 1265 (Reg. Clement IV, no. 232). Pope Martin V, with the bull Ex supernae maiestatis of 19 Oct. 1422, united U. to the see of Ancona. Pope Benedict XIV, with a bull of 22 Apr. 1747, willed that the prelates of Ancona assume the title of bishops and counts of U.
