UMANA. – Today a rural parish in the province of Ancona (Marche) and an ancient diocese, dating from a remote period.
After the see of Recanati was suppressed in 1264, it was united with U. on 28 March 1265 (Reg. Clemente IV, no. 232). Pope Martino V, by the bull Ex supernae maiestatis of 19 October 1422, united U. with the see of Ancona. Pope Benedetto XIV, by a bull of 22 April 1747, decreed that the prelates of Ancona should assume the title of bishops and counts of U.
