UMBRIATICO. - One of the five microscopic dioceses that formed the metropolis of S. Severina (v.), in Calabria.

It was erected by the Byzantines in the 9th century and must certainly be identified with the Εὐράνων of the Notitia III or Dastiposi of Leo VI the Philosopher, which Grimaldi wrongly identified with the Uria or Miria near the Simeri river, and Minasi even with the Oria of Apulia. A Greek document of 1164, published by Holtzman (in Byzant. Zeitschr., 26 [1926], pp. 341 ff.), removes all doubt, because in it Robert, bishop of U., signs himself as ἐπίσωστος Εὐράς. The existence of a bishop of U. ordained by Hilary, archbishop of Reggio, in the time of Sixtus III, that is, in the 5th century, asserted by Ughelli and also accepted by Gams, is purely fanciful. Before the 8th century there were no metropolitans in Calabria, and U. was elevated to a diocese by the Byzantines together with the metropolis of S. Severina. Among the five tiny suffragan sees of this metropolis, U. had the greatest extent and had within its territory the city of Corò, which gave birth to Luigi Giglio, originator of the Gregorian reform of the calendar. In 1818 it was suppressed and its territory annexed to that of Cariati, which, in turn, had taken the place of Cerenzia.
