VIZZINI, GIUSEPPE. - Theologian and bishop, b. at Villalba (Caltanissetta) on 10 Nov. 1874, d. at Ferla (Noto) on 8 Dec. 1935.

A pupil of the Collegio Leoniano in Rome, he graduated brilliantly in philosophy, theology and canon law at S. Apollinare, where he subsequently held the chairs of philosophy, ecclesiastical history and sacramental theology. A sharp and versatile mind, he anchored theological speculation to the texts of Scripture and Tradition, and to this end he began the Bibliotheca Sanctorum Patrum (series graeca et latina, 22 vols., Rome 1901 ff.), in which he displays fine theological sensitivity in his commentaries on the more obscure or more controversial passages of the authors edited. The De S. ma Eucharistia (lithographed, Rome 1912) reflects the V.'s best didactic qualities. Elected bishop of Noto by the blessed Pius X (19 Aug.

1913), he renewed the diocese with distinguished works (reorganization of the Seminary and of the Curia, diocesan synod, reform of worship, growth of Catholic Action, foundation of the Work of Priestly Vocations, establishment of about 40 new parishes). The Dominican Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus found in the V. a wise reorganizer, who with suitable constitutions oriented their apostolate according to the needs of the times.
