Brief approving the Society of Jesus in the Russian Empire

Brief of Pope Pius VII ·

OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN APPROBATION AND TO OUR BELOVED SON FRANCIS KAREU, PRIEST AND SUPERIOR OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE, PIUS POPE VII,

1 Beloved son, greetings and apostolic blessing.

2 Providing for the preservation and cultivation of the Catholic faith in the regions of the most vast Russian empire, and for the restoration of the spiritual governance of the faithful, our predecessor of blessed memory, Pope Pius VI, with the assent of Catherine II, then living, Empress of all Russia, through an apostolic Legate, John Andrew, Archbishop of Chalcedon, now Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church and Bishop of Sabina, erected one metropolitan see with its Chapter in the city of Mohilew, and placed over it as Archbishop and Pastor the venerable brother Stanislaus Siestrentcewicz, with ordinary faculty and power over the Catholics of the Latin rite in all those provinces and regions of the entire Russian empire in which no episcopal see had been erected. When new provinces, which formerly were subject to the King and Republic of Poland, were added to the Russian empire, the illustrious will of the most serene Emperor Paul I toward the Catholics brought it about that the same predecessor of Ours, Pius

CONFIRMATION IN THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE.

3 Pope VI, through another Legate, the venerable brother Lawrence, Archbishop of Thebes, confirmed, established, and fortified by apostolic authority the episcopal sees of the Catholics of both the Greek and Latin rites, long since erected in those same regions; and he also increased and adorned the Church of Mohilew itself with metropolitan power.

4 Yet although many things have been provided from the providence of the Apostolic See and the benignity of the supreme Prince Paul I for the spiritual salvation of Catholics, what are those things, or how can they suffice in so great a breadth of kingdoms, which extends into the parts of Europe and Asia, in which there are neither any episcopal sees, nor monasteries of any Order of Regulars, a scanty or no number of Priests, many seeking pasture, but having none to show them salutary pasture, so that therefore we, who are Pastors in the whole house of Israel, ought repeatedly to repeat with Christ our Redeemer, "The harvest indeed is great, but the labourers are few"? Wherefore, since certain Priests of the Society of Jesus, which had been extinguished through apostolic letters of Clement Pope XIV, our predecessor, dwelling in those parts for many years, were to be instructed and imbued with good morals and the rudiments of the Catholic faith; on 7 March 1801 Pius VII, in order to bring aid to Catholics, at the petition of the Emperor Paul I and Francis Karou, being willing to favour with graces the surviving Priests of the extinguished Society of Jesus, who greatly desire to bind themselves to the instruction of youth, the preaching of the word of God, and the administration of the sacraments; and the most clement Emperor Paul I declared that he wished to use their services especially for the spiritual care and instruction of his Catholic subjects, and earnestly requested that they be joined into one body and fortified by our authority.

5 You therefore, in your own name and in the name of the Priests dwelling there aforesaid, have presented to Us most humble petitions, in which with obedient spirit you have supplicated that, lest this assembly and your Society, supported by no safeguards with which the Apostolic See is accustomed to fortify the Regular Orders and Congregations, should be dissolved by the death of those who now live, We should decree by apostolic authority that you be united to your former Society and be able to exist canonically. We, who are called by God to undertake the burden of apostolic service, albeit with unequal strength, ought to omit no duty in accordance with Our pastoral solicitude, but rather to stir up with new incentives the Clergy and Priests who do not shrink from study and labor in cultivating the vineyard of the Lord, and to pursue them also with graces and favors. Truly, We judge that no remedy more apt for cutting away vices, for retaining the discipline of morals, and for instructing the Christian people in the precepts of faith can be applied than to associate ecclesiastical men into one body, joining them by common laws and institutions under the power of one Superior, so that in struggling against the enemy of mankind, they may break and utterly overcome him, not with dispersed and separated forces, but with one as it were army formed and armed with the sword of God's word, by means of his manifold and insidious arts of harming. Truly then is fulfilled the wish of the royal Psalmist: "O how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity... because there the Lord hath commanded blessing, and life for evermore"; and again in another place: "They that dwell in the house of the Lord are of one mind and one speech, sweetly taking food together in the house of the Lord with consent"; not indeed those foods which serve for the nourishment of the body, but spiritual foods, which increase the strength of the soul and refresh the hungry seeking bread and finding none to give it to them. Since therefore this petition of yours is equitable and honest, and most useful to the cultivators of the Catholic religion, and very great weight is added to it from the commendation of the most powerful and most illustrious Emperor Paul I. For indeed by his most humane letters given to Us on the eleventh day of August of the preceding year 1800, he showed himself to be most favorably disposed toward you, and signified that your petition would be most gratifying to him if admitted by Us, judging it most useful to aid his Catholic subjects by this new spiritual protection; for he judged that nothing conduces more to instructing youth in the worship of God, in the discipline of morals, in obedience to higher powers, than if approved and proven ecclesiastical men be placed in charge of undertaking this burden; which he greatly relies upon from your faith, integrity and learning. Wherefore already in the first place he committed to you with great liberality the temple which has been built for Catholics in Petersburg, to be guarded by you and for the celebration of sacred ministries; he is prepared to restore and commend Colleges to you, and to undertake other things which we are confident will be most beneficial to the people of Our communion. But in return for such great and imperial benefits and graces, ought not we Priests and others who are attached to you or desire to be attached to you, to be united into one Congregation of the Society of Jesus, and in return for the benefits conferred by so great a Prince upon our Catholics, ought we not to render thanks and assent to his wishes, and not allow your commendation undertaken by him before Us to be vain and empty? Having therefore weighed all things, and especially having maturely considered those varieties of times, places and persons, which counsel and almost command Us, who are the supreme Moderators of the Church, to undertake new counsels or to moderate former ones, as the utility of the Church demands; having first implored with earnest prayers the protection of divine Providence, and having taken into counsel certain Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, being willing to receive your petitions benignly: We, by Our own motion, certain knowledge and from the fullness of Our apostolic power, absolving you and your Associates from any excommunication, suspension and interdict, and from other ecclesiastical sentences, censures and penalties imposed by law or by man for any occasion or cause whatsoever, if you are bound by any of them in any way, for the purpose of obtaining the effect of these presents only, and holding you to be absolved; We permit and grant by the same apostolic authority that you and the other Priests dwelling there, or who shall come hereafter, and who have long since given their names to such a Congregation, or shall hereafter give them, be able to be united, gathered together and joined into one body and Congregation of the Society of Jesus, within however the bounds of the Russian Empire only, and not outside, in one or more Houses designated at the discretion of the Superior. Moreover, We appoint and constitute you, beloved son, as Superior or General President of this Congregation at Our and the Apostolic See's pleasure, with all necessary and opportune faculties; We grant that the original rule of St. Ignatius, confirmed and approved by Pope Paul III, Our predecessor, in his apostolic constitutions, be able to be followed and retained; and We likewise decree and declare that your Associates, whom you shall have admitted into the Congregation, be able freely and validly to be engaged in the instruction of boys in good morals and disciplines, to govern Colleges and Seminaries, and, with the approval and consent of the local Ordinaries, to receive the confessions of the faithful, to announce the word of God, to administer the sacraments. And moreover We receive you all and this Congregation of the Society of Jesus under Our and the Apostolic See's immediate protection and subjection, and We reserve to Ourselves and Our successors to prescribe and enact in the Lord whatever shall seem expedient for establishing and fortifying it, and for purging it from abuses and corruptions, if any have crept in. Decreeing that these Our present letters shall always be firm, valid and effective, and ought to obtain and secure their full and complete effects, and shall most fully avail for those to whom they pertain and shall pertain for the time being, in all things and through all things, and shall be inviolably observed respectively by them.

6 Notwithstanding any ordinances and apostolic constitutions whatsoever, statutes and customs, privileges also and indults and apostolic letters granted, confirmed and renewed in any way to the contrary of the foregoing, and those especially of Pope Clement XIV beginning Dominus ac Redemptor, issued under the Fisherman's Ring on the twenty-first day of March 1801, and [the rule of St. Ignatius which permits equality]* adorned with suitable faculties, and receiving immediate subjection under the Holy See, [he appends clauses].

7 He derogates from contrary provisions.

8 Faith is given to the transcript.

Brief to the Congregation of the Society of Jesus given for the Russian Empire,

APPROBATION OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS IN THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE

9 July 1773, in those matters only which are contrary to these Our [letters], and for the dominion of the Russian Empire alone. All and singular of which, their tenor being held by these Our [letters] as fully and sufficiently expressed and inserted word for word, remaining otherwise in their force, we specially and expressly derogate for the purpose of the foregoing alone, and from all other things whatsoever to the contrary.

10 We will, however, that to transcripts or copies even printed of these same present letters, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and furnished with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith shall be given in judgment and outside of judgment as would be given to these presents themselves, if they were exhibited or shown.

11 Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the seventh day of March 1801, in the first year of Our Pontificate.

DELLA SOCIETÀ DI GESÙ IN APPROVAZIONE E AL DILETTO FIGLIO FRANCESCO KAREU, PRESBITERO E SUPERIORE DELLA CONGREGAZIONE DELLA SOCIETÀ DI GESÙ NELL'IMPERO RUSSO, PIO PAPA VII,

1 Diletto figlio, salute e benedizione apostolica.

NELL'IMPERO RUSSO CONFERMAZIONE.
