Summorum Pontificum
Apostolic Constitution declaring St. Ignatius of Loyola heavenly patron of spiritual exercises
PIUS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, TO PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THIS MATTER
APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION
SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM
ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA IS DECLARED HEAVENLY PATRON OF ALL SPIRITUAL EXERCISES.
1 It has ever been the principal care of the Sovereign Pontiffs to commend with the highest praise and to promote with powerful encouragement those things which greatly conduce to piety and to the perfection of Christian life. Now among the various such aids, a distinguished place is claimed by those Spiritual Exercises which St. Ignatius brought into the Church by a certain divine inspiration. For although, such is the benignity of God's mercy, there have never been lacking those who would aptly set forth heavenly things fully perceived for the contemplation of the faithful of Christ, yet Ignatius was the first, in the little book which he composed when he was still quite unlearned in letters, which he himself entitled Spiritual Exercises, to begin to teach a certain method and peculiar way of conducting spiritual retreats, by which the faithful would be wonderfully aided in detesting sins and in holily ordering their lives according to the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. By the virtue of this Ignatian method it came to pass that the great usefulness of these Exercises, as our predecessor of illustrious memory Leo XIII affirmed, was proved « by the experience now of three centuries.... and by the testimony of all men who flourished most notably in that same period either in the discipline of asceticism or in holiness of morals »1. Besides so many and such illustrious men of sanctity, whether from the Ignatian family itself, who most eloquently professed that they had drawn all the principles of virtue from this as from a fountain, two lights of the Church
2 it pleases us to commemorate from the secular clergy: St. Francis of Sales and St. Charles Borromaeus. For Francis, in order to prepare himself fittingly for episcopal consecration, diligently devoted himself to the Ignatian Exercises, and in them ordered for himself that manner of living which he always thereafter maintained according to the principles of the reformation of life handed down in the little book of St. Ignatius. But Charles Borromaeus, as our predecessor of happy memory Pius X showed2, and as we ourselves before our elevation to the Supreme Pontificate demonstrated in published monuments of history, having experienced in himself the power of these Exercises, by which he was impelled to a more perfect life, spread their use among the clergy and people. Among the holy men and women devoted to religious discipline, it suffices by way of example to name that mistress of the highest contemplation, Theresa, and the son of the seraphic Patriarch, Leonard of Porto Maurizio, who indeed so valued the little book of St. Ignatius that he confessed he followed his method entirely in winning souls for God.
3 The Roman Pontiffs, therefore, having solemnly approved this book of small size but « admirable »3 from its very first edition, extolled it with praises, and invested it with Apostolic authority, thereafter did not cease to urge its use, both by enriching it with the gifts of holy indulgences and by honoring it with new commendations from time to time. Wherefore we, being persuaded that the evils of our times derive their origin in great part from the fact that there is now scarcely anyone who reflects in his heart4, and having ascertained that the Spiritual Exercises conducted according to the discipline of St. Ignatius are able to avail much toward breaking through the most difficult hardships with which human society is now everywhere beset; and having verified that a joyful harvest of virtues, as formerly so also today, ripens in sacred retreats, both among religious families and secular priests, and among the laity and—which is worthy of special mention in our age—among the very workers themselves; we most earnestly desire that the use of these Spiritual Exercises be spread more widely day by day, and that those houses of piety, to which one withdraws for a whole month or eight days or, if that cannot be done, fewer days, may exist and flourish with increasing frequency as a training ground for perfect Christian life.
4 Since we beseech this of God for the sake of our love for the Lord's flock, and since the Sacred Prelates of almost the entire Catholic world of both rites, satisfying with most ardent zeal and prayers, and also at this time, into which there happily fall both the solemnities of the third centennial year since honors were paid to Ignatius among the Saints and the fourth from the completion of this golden book, desiring themselves to give a clear sign of gratitude to our St. Patriarch, having set before ourselves the example of our Predecessors who assigned other Protectors and Patrons to other Institutes, having taken counsel with the venerable Brethren, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over the Congregation of Sacred Rites, by our Apostolic authority, we declare, constitute, and proclaim St. Ignatius of Loyola the Heavenly Patron of all Spiritual Exercises and therefore of all institutes, sodalities, and associations of every kind, of those who undertake the Spiritual Exercises and devote their labor and study to them.
5 We decree that these letters of ours are firm, valid, and effective and shall ever be so, and shall produce and obtain their full and complete effects, notwithstanding anything to the contrary whatsoever.
6 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred twenty-two, on the twenty-fifth day of the month of July, in the first year of Our Pontificate.

PIUS EPISCOPUS SERVUS SERVORUM DEIAD PERPETUAM REI MEMORIAM
CONSTITUTIO APOSTOLICA
SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM*
S. IGNATIUS DB LOYOLA CAELESTIS EXERCITIORUM SPIRITUALIUM PATRONUS DECLARATUR.

PIO VESCOVO SERVO DEI SERVI
COSTITUZIONE APOSTOLICA
SUMMORUM PONTIFICUM*
