Superni benignitas conditoris
Bull instituting the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
1 Office and Mass of this kind he granted indulgences by these presents. — 5. With these provisions, he exhorts bishops and others to the publication and observance of such a feast. — 6. Concluding clauses.
2 Boniface, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for the remembrance of this matter in perpetuity.
3 The kindness of the Supreme Creator, regarding the human race, created in His own likeness, with merciful piety, and considering it to have been cast down by the fall of the first parent, decreed by wonderful counsel that it should be relieved, namely that the Supereminent Word, which was in the beginning, should free it from the bonds of death by His incarnation. Therefore, by the charity of the pious Father, which moved us to mystery, when the fullness of time came, that same eternal Word, under the form of a servant, assumed our mortal flesh, so that by dying He might destroy that same death of ours, and the sentence of damnation together with the stain which, through the guilt of the first man, the posterity of the human race was known to have incurred, the clement goodness of the eternal Word might abolish. Wherefore from the noble royal stock of David He chose beforehand a Virgin in whose womb, by mystical inspiration, that same Word might assume flesh, so that she might bring forth, according to the prophetic word, a Rod from the root of Jesse, and a flower from his root should ascend, and the Spirit of the Lord should rest upon Him; choosing a perfect queen, an illustrious mother, who was worthy to prepare for so great a King the chamber of her body, from whom, as a bridegroom among the sons of men, He should proceed fair, and He chose Nazareth, which is called a flower or sanctuary, for His conception, in which, through the words of the angelic greeting, the mysteries and wonders of the incarnate Word were solemnly celebrated. There indeed we received the beginning of our redemption, there first the day of sanctification shone forth, which brought us hope of salvation and joy of eternity. In this place of such great fruitfulness the most beautiful royal Virgin, preserved by the Lord, the flower of holiness, the most pure vessel of heavenly grace, adorned with the flowers of all virtues, whose beauty the sun and moon marvel at, the Virgin conceived the Redeemer of the nations, about to give light to the nations placed under the darkness of death.
4 § 1. Indeed that same Queen of heaven, in whose womb the Son of God, made man, shut Himself, from the height of such honor announced to her by an angel, by no means assumed a spirit of pride, but as a humble handmaid, although she had become the mother of the Lord, fulfilling the office of that humility which the Lord regarded, rising up went into the hill country to Elisabeth her kinswoman, who was called barren, already six months with child, with haste: and just as she had humbly received the oracle of greeting from the angel, so also she herself humbly greeted Elisabeth; and Elisabeth, when she heard the greeting of the glorious Virgin, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and sensing the mystery of the incarnate Word in the virginal womb, cried out with a loud voice and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, as soon as the voice of thy greeting sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy: and blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.
5 § 2. To whom the venerable Virgin, responding in the spirit of humility, sang that wonderful canticle: My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me, and holy is His name. O great mystery, O admirable exchange, O ineffable sacrament, that mothers might in spirit perceive and even prophesy concerning the pledges which they bore in their wombs, and, as the history of the sacred Gospel unfolds, the queen of heaven, heavy with the child to be consecrated by divine birth, as a fuller sign of greater humility, rendered service to the mother heavy with child of the Precursor, whom she bore: which service being rendered and this visitation being completed, as it were in the space of three months, she returned to her own house. This is indeed she of whom the sacred songs sing: Clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and crowned with twelve stars. This is indeed she who in her own most pure womb bore the Maker of heaven and earth, and alone destroyed all heresies, and for the Christian people, as a valiant advocate and unwearied intercessor, intercedes with the King whom she bore.
6 The Feast of the Visitation instituted by Urban. My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me, and holy is His name. O great mystery, O admirable exchange, O ineffable sacrament, that mothers might in spirit perceive beforehand the pledges which they bore in their wombs, and might also prophesy, and that, as the history of the sacred Gospel reveals, the Queen of Heaven, heavy with child to be consecrated by divine consecration, as a sign of greater humility, rendered obedience to her precursor, whom she bore, the Son, to the mother heavy with child in humility: which obedience being rendered and this visitation being completed, as it were in the space of three months, she returned to her own house. For this is she of whom the sacred praises sing: Clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and crowned with twelve stars she hath merited. For this is she who in her own chaste womb bore the Maker of heaven and earth, and alone hath destroyed all heresies, and for the Christian people, as a strenuous advocate and unwearied intercessor, intercedeth with the King whom she brought forth.
7 § 3. Therefore Urban, the sixth Pope of blessed memory, our predecessor, judging it worthy and fitting that the feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Mary the Virgin herself, when, as aforesaid, she visited Elizabeth, should be celebrated in the Church of God, supported by the pious testimony of the holy Gospel which cannot be weakened by human reasoning: and considering that the praises of so great a Virgin human tongue is not sufficient to express, nor even the saints and the just, in whose dwelling He, whom the heavens could not contain, betook Himself to a virgin chamber, are able to set forth fully with worthy praises and proclamations: and considering that since we are commanded to praise the Lord in His saints, how much more, in the veneration of the Blessed Mary the Virgin, the Mother of the same, ought we with exulting souls to praise together, and by increasing the titles of her praises, to render thanks to Him whom she bore, the Son, who also, exalted above the stars, sat down in the starry throne of her Begetter, nor would it have been possible to resist the divine will, who deigned to inspire the mind both of Himself and of other men devoted to the celebration of such a holy festival, as the same predecessor piously believed, having also held mature deliberation on this matter, by the counsel of his brethren, the cardinals of the holy Roman Church, of which number we then were, for the worthy and reasonable exaltation of the Catholic faith, namely on the sixth day before the Ides of April, in the eleventh year of his pontificate, he decreed that the aforesaid feast, namely of the Visitation of the Blessed Mary the Virgin, when, as aforesaid, she visited Elizabeth, on the sixth day before the Kalends of July, should be solemnly celebrated every year in the Church of God, with the canticle of praises, the jubilation of joy and the exultation of heart, under a double office, throughout the whole world. He also persuaded and with a double office, fasting, and the same predecessor counselled, that the vigil of the same feast, as the vigil of the Nativity and Assumption of the aforesaid Virgin's festivals, should also be more devoutly observed in the observance of fasting. And he commanded that a similar, though not double office without the commemoration of any Saint, except on the first Vespers before the octave of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and the office of the whole day of the octave, with the commemoration nevertheless of the same new feast, should be sung throughout the seven following days in the Church of God with due solemnity.
8 § 4. And also the same predecessor, wishing to animate the faithful of Christ to the veneration of so great a present feast of the Virgin and also to celebrate it with spiritual indulgences, and desiring to forestall them with mystical gifts of blessings from the treasures of the Church militant: to all the truly penitent and confessed, who should be present at the matins office of the same feast in the Church where the same office should be celebrated, one hundred days; and to those who should be present at the Mass, the same number; and to those who should be present at the first Vespers of the feast, similarly one hundred days; and to those who should be present at the second, the same number; and to those who should be present at the Prime, Terce, Sext, None and Compline offices, for each of the hours of the same, forty days; and to those who should be present at the matins, Vespers, Mass and the aforesaid hours offices throughout the octaves of the aforesaid feast, one hundred days on each of the days of the same octaves, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul His, he mercifully remitted from the penances enjoined upon them.
9 § 5. Lest, however, because, these being confirmed, the death of the predecessor supervening, the apostolic letters drawn up on the aforesaid matters should have lacked effect and observance by the bishops, this constitution of ours and of the said predecessor should be frustrated of effect: we, approving and by apostolic authority decreeing, that this constitution from the said day, namely the sixth day before the Ides of April, should have effect in the same manner, as if the letters of the predecessor had been drawn up on the date of the same day, as we have narrated above: and that these present letters should fully suffice to prove this constitution everywhere, nor should any other aid of proof be required for it: we admonish and exhort all patriarchs, archbishops, bishops and other prelates of the Churches in the Lord, by apostolic writings to them, in virtue of holy obedience strictly commanding and enjoining in remission of sins, that they should celebrate so glorious and celebrated a feast every year on the sixth day before the Kalends of July, as aforesaid, devoutly and solemnly, and should persuade the fasting of this vigil to be observed for the increase of merit, and should cause it to be celebrated throughout all the Churches of their cities and dioceses, and the office to be performed as aforesaid: so that by the pious intercession of the same Virgin Mary the faithful of Christ may both here be protected from harm, and in the future deserve to obtain eternal joys.
10 § 6. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of our will, constitution, admonition, exhortation and command, etc.
11 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on the fifth day before the Ides of November, in the first year of our pontificate.
12 Given on 9 November 1389, pontificate year 1.
