SUGLI UFFICI DIVINI DA ORDINARSI IN PARTE NUOVAMENTE

1 Due anni or sono, quando promulgammo la Costituzione Apostolica Divino afflatu, nella quale abbiamo propriamente provveduto affinché, per quanto fosse possibile, la recitazione del Salterio si compisse entro la settimana, e gli antichi Uffici delle Domeniche fossero restituiti, certamente molte altre cose ci agitavano l'animo, in parte meditate, in parte anche iniziate, progetti che riguardavano l'emendazione del Breviario Romano, da Noi intrapresa; ma tuttavia, poiché non era lecito allora eseguirli a causa delle molteplici difficoltà, fummo costretti a rinviarli a un tempo più opportuno. Infatti, per la composizione del Breviario così corretto che risulti quale lo vogliamo, cioè perfetto in tutti i dettagli, occorrono: richiamare il Calendario della Chiesa universale alla sua primitiva descrizione e forma, salve però le belle aggiunte che la mirabile fecondità della Chiesa, madre dei Santi, vi ha sempre apportato; adoperare idonei passi delle Scritture e dei Padri e dei Dottori, ridotti al genuino testo; sobriamente rielaborare dalle fonti le vite dei Santi; disporre più opportunamente molti tratti della Liturgia, liberati da cose superflue. Ora, tutte queste cose, secondo il giudizio di dotti e prudenti, richiedono lavori non solo grandi, ma anche lunghi; e per questa ragione è necessario che interceda una lunga serie di anni, prima che questo edificio liturgico, che la mistica Sposa di Cristo, per manifestare la sua pietà e la sua fede, ha conformato con intelligente studio, appaia di nuovo splendido di dignità e di armonia, come ripulito dalla squallida negligenza.

2 Nel frattempo, dalle lettere e dalle parole di molti Venerabili Fratelli abbiamo saputo che a loro e a moltissimi sacerdoti è sommamente desiderabile che nel Breviario, insieme al Salterio disposto secondo il nuovo ordine e con le sue rubriche, si trovino tutti i cambiamenti che il nuovo Salterio ha già seguito o può seguire. Poiché ce lo chiedevano istantemente, ci significarono insieme che ardentemente desiderano che il nuovo Salterio sia usato più frequentemente, che gli Uffici delle Domeniche siano osservati con maggiore diligenza, che si provveda agli inconvenienti delle traslazioni degli Uffici, e che altri cambiamenti che sembrino opportuni siano effettuati. Questi voti, poiché fondati sulla verità e molto conformi alla Nostra volontà, li abbiamo accolti volentieri: e ora riteniamo che sia tempo di assecondarli. Infatti siamo stati informati che i tipografi, che servono la Congregazione dei Sacri Riti, in attesa che il Breviario Romano sia corretto in modo definitivo e conclusivo, sono intenti ad allestire una nuova edizione dello stesso Breviario. Cogliendo questa occasione, ci è parso opportuno; perciò, implorando il lume della divina Sapienza, avuta consultazione con alcuni Cardinali della Santa Romana Chiesa, e richiesto il parere di un apposito Consiglio, con questo Motu Proprio stabiliamo, decretiamo:

3 I. Secondo l'antica consuetudine della Chiesa, affinché non si omettano facilmente gli Uffici delle Domeniche. — Pertanto nessuna festa, neppure del Signore, sia stabilita d'ora innanzi da celebrarsi nelle Domeniche; tuttavia da queste si eccettui, per la sua particolare natura, quella che ricorre dal primo al quinto giorno di gennaio: la quale, commemorando il santissimo Nome di Gesù, per la connessione che ha col mistero della Circoncisione, assegniamo. — Le feste invece, alle quali fino ad ora era stata attribuita la domenica, tutte, eccetto la festa della santissima Trinità, siano perpetuamente trasferite ad altro giorno. — Affinché però durante la Quaresima non si ometta alcuno degli Uffici delle Domeniche, che mirabilmente sono stati composti per eccitare negli animi cristiani la penitenza, la seconda, terza e quarta domenica di quel tempo le promuoviamo al grado di I Classe.

4 II. Poiché la celebrazione delle Ottave è di impedimento alla recitazione del Salterio, affinché ciò accada più raramente, d'ora innanzi solo i duplici di I Classe, che hanno Ottave intere, le conservino: tuttavia in queste stesse Ottave, eccettuate le privilegiate, si usino i Salmi della Feria corrente. — Le Ottave invece dei duplici di II Classe si celebrino solo nel giorno ottavo e precisamente con rito semplice.

5 III. Alle Lezioni della Scrittura che ricorrono sempre si uniscano i Responsori del Tempo.

6 IV. Nessuna traslazione, neppure perpetua, delle Feste che si celebrano nella Chiesa universale sia fatta, se non dei duplici di I e II Classe.

7 Ora, come debbano essere attuate le cose da Noi qui prescritte, e che cosa inoltre di nuovo non solo nel Breviario, ma anche nel Messale, che con esso deve concordare, da esso emanare debba, la sacra Congregazione dei Riti, seguendo il parere di una speciale Commissione da Noi istituita, lo stabilirà con propri decreti, e la stessa curerà che sia fatta la nuova edizione tipica tanto del Breviario quanto del Messale.

8 Queste stesse prescrizioni vogliamo che abbiano valore non appena questo Motu Proprio sia stato promulgato. Tuttavia, tenuto conto sia dei Calendari che sono già stati confezionati per l'anno prossimo, sia del tempo che i tipografi richiedono, permettiamo a coloro che per recitare l'Ufficio usano il Breviario Romano, tanto del Clero secolare quanto del regolare di entrambi i sessi, di non essere vincolati da queste prescrizioni se non dalle Calende dell'anno MCMXV. Coloro invece che legittimamente usano un altro Breviario diverso dal Romano, la sacra Congregazione dei Riti definirà entro quali termini debbano adattarsi alle medesime prescrizioni.

9 A chiunque però sia lecito procurarsi e adoperare anche ora per la recitazione delle ore canoniche i Breviarii che sono in uso, purché tuttavia abbia in un libello particolare, da cui possa ottemperare alla Costituzione Divino afflatu e ai decreti che l'hanno seguita, e insieme osservi diligentemente ciò che Noi con questo Motu Proprio stabiliamo e tutto ciò che la sacra Congregazione dei Riti avrà decretato in proposito.

10 E tutte queste cose costituiamo, edichiamo, non ostante alcunché di contrario, anche se degno di speciale menzione.

2 Interea ex litteris et sermone multorum Venerabilium Fratrum cognovimus ipsis et permultis sacerdotibus esse optatissimum, ut in Breviario una cum Psalterio nova ratione disposito suisque rubricis adsint mutationes omnes, quae ipsum novum Psalterium vel iam secutae sunt vel sequi possunt. Quod cum instanter a Nobis peterent, simul significarunt se vehementer cupere, ut et Psalterium novum usurpetur frequentius, et Officia Dominicarum serventur eo studiosius, et incommodis Officiorum translationibus occurratur, et alia quaedam quae bonum videatur mutari, mutentur. Secundum priscam Ecclesiae consuetudinem, ne facile Officia Dominicarum praetermittantur. — Itaque nullum festum, ne Domini quidem, statuatur posthac Dominicis celebrandum; ex his tamen excipiatur, ob peculiarem ipsius naturam, ea quae a die prima ad quintam Ianuarii occurrat : quam recolendo sanctissimo Nomini Iesu, propter coniunctionem quam habet cum mysterio Circumcisionis, assignamus. — Festa vero, quibus usque adhuc dies Dominica attributa erat, omnia, praeter festum sanctissimae Trinitatis, in aliam diem perpetuo transferantur. — Ne forte autem per Quadragesimam aliquod omittatur ex Dominicarum Officiis, quae mire facta sunt ad excitandam in animis christianam paenitentiam, eius temporis secundam, tertiam et quartam Dominicam ad gradum I Classis promovemus.

Cum recitationi Psalterii celebratio Octavarum sit impedimento, id ut rarius contingat, in posterum sola duplicia I Classis, quae Octavas integras habent, eas conservent : verum in hisce ipsis Octavis, exceptis privilegiatis, Psalmi de Feria currenti usurpentur. — Octavae autem duplicium II Classis solo Octavo die celebrentur et quidem ritu simplici.

5 III. Lectionibus de Scriptura occurrenti semper adhaereant Responsoria de Tempore.

6 IV. Nulla, ne perpetua quidem, Festorum, quae in Ecclesia universali celebrantur, translatio fiat, nisi duplicium I et II Classis.

7 Iam, quae hic a Nobis praescripta sunt, ea quemadmodum adduci ad effectum debeant, et quid praeterea novi non modo in Breviarium, sed etiam in Missale, quod cum illo congruat oportet, indidem emanet, sacra Rituum Congregatio, peculiaris Commissionis a Nobis institutae consulta sequens, propriis decretis constituet, eademque tum Breviarii tum Missalis novam editionem typicam faciendam curabit.

ON THE DIVINE OFFICES TO BE ARRANGED IN SOME NEW MANNER

1 Two years ago, when We issued the Apostolic Constitution Divino afflatu, by which We properly aimed that, as far as it could be done, both the recitation of the Psalter would be completed within a week, and the ancient Offices of Sundays would be restored, there were indeed many other matters turning over in Our mind, partly meditated upon, partly even begun, counsels which pertained to the correction of the Roman Breviary, undertaken by Us; but those, since on account of manifold difficulties it was not then permitted to carry them out, We were compelled to defer to a more convenient time. For indeed, to compose the Breviary so corrected that it might exist such as We wish, that is, complete in all respects, these things are necessary: to restore the Calendar of the universal Church to its ancient description and form, yet preserving the beautiful additions which the ever wonderful fruitfulness of the Church, the mother of Saints, has brought to it; to employ suitable passages of the Scriptures and of the Fathers and Doctors, reduced to genuine reading; to treat soberly the lives of Saints from monuments; to arrange more fittingly several tracts of the Liturgy, freed from superfluous matters. Now indeed all these things, by the judgment of learned and prudent men, require labors both great and long-lasting; and for that reason a long series of years must necessarily intervene, before this as it were liturgical edifice, which the mystical Spouse of Christ, to declare her piety and faith, has conformed with intelligent study, might appear again, splendid in dignity and harmonious, as if cleansed of squalor in beauty.

2 Meanwhile, from the letters and discourse of many Venerable Brethren, We learned that it is most desired by them and by very many priests that in the Breviary, together with the Psalter arranged in a new manner and with its rubrics, there be present all the changes which the new Psalter has either already followed or can follow. Since they requested this earnestly from Us, they at the same time signified that they greatly desire both that the new Psalter be used more frequently, and that the Offices of Sundays be observed more diligently, and that inconveniences from the translations of Offices be remedied, and that certain other things which seem good to be changed, be changed. Such wishes as these, being founded upon truth and very consonant with Our will, We have indeed received with favor: but We judge that now is the time to comply with them. For We have been assured that the printers and booksellers who serve the Sacred Congregation of Rites, awaiting the time when the Roman Breviary shall be corrected in a decisive and definitive manner, are in the process of preparing a new edition of the Breviary itself in the meantime. Making use of this opportunity, it seemed good to Us; therefore, having implored the light of divine Wisdom, having taken counsel with some Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, and having sought the opinion of a certain Council of Our own, We establish, decree, and ordain by this Motu Proprio:

3 I. According to the ancient custom of the Church, lest the Offices of Sundays be easily passed over. — Therefore, let no feast, not even of the Lord, be henceforth appointed to be celebrated on Sundays; from these, however, let that be excepted which occurs from the first to the fifth day of January, on account of its peculiar nature: which, in commemorating the most holy Name of Jesus, on account of the connection it has with the mystery of the Circumcision, We assign. — But all feasts to which hitherto the day of Sunday was attributed, except the feast of the most holy Trinity, shall be perpetually transferred to another day. — Lest perchance during Lent some of the Offices of Sundays, which have been wonderfully made to stir up Christian penance in souls, be omitted, the second, third, and fourth Sunday of that season We promote to the rank of Class I.

4 II. Since the celebration of Octaves is an impediment to the recitation of the Psalter, in order that this occur more rarely, henceforth only the doubles of Class I, which have complete Octaves, shall preserve them: but in these very Octaves, except the privileged ones, the Psalms of the current Weekday shall be used. — But the Octaves of doubles of Class II shall be celebrated on the Octave day alone and indeed with simple rite.

5 III. Let the Responsories of the Season always adhere to the Lessons from Scripture occurring.

6 IV. Let no translation of Feasts, not even perpetual ones, which are celebrated in the universal Church, be made, except of doubles of Class I and II.

7 Now, the things which We have prescribed here, in what manner they ought to be brought into effect, and what besides new things not only in the Breviary, but also in the Missal, which ought to be in agreement with it, should emanate from the same source, the Sacred Congregation of Rites, following the counsel of a special Commission instituted by Us, shall establish by its own decrees, and the same shall take care that a new typical edition both of the Breviary and of the Missal be made.

8 We will that these same prescriptions, as soon as this Motu Proprio has been promulgated, shall have force. But nevertheless, taking into account either the Calendars which have already been prepared for the coming year, or the time which printers require, We permit those who use the Roman Breviary for the recitation of the office, both from the secular clergy and from the regular clergy of both sexes, not to be bound by these prescriptions except from the Kalends of the year 1915. But those who legitimately use another Breviary different from the Roman, the sacred Congregation of Rites shall define within what limits they ought to accommodate themselves to the same prescriptions.

9 Moreover, it shall be lawful for anyone to procure for himself and even now to use for the recitation of the canonical hours Breviaries which are in use, provided however that he have in a special booklet the means by which he can obey the Constitution Divino afflatu and the decrees which followed it, and at the same time diligently observe what We have established by this Motu Proprio and whatever the sacred Congregation of Rites shall have decreed in this matter.

10 And We establish, decree, and ordain all these things, any contrary provisions whatsoever, even those worthy of special mention, notwithstanding in no way.
