Lettera apostolica di papa Pio IX ·

LETTERE

LITTERAE
Quibus Abbati pro tempore S. Petri Solesmesis conceditur in perpetuum usus C&ppae Magnae et locus inter Consult.rej S. Bituum Congregationis.
PIUS PP. IX.

Haec in Catholici nominis procurando bono tota fere vita transacta, veluti in novum splendorem redundat Congregationis Benedictinae in Gallia consistentis, satis quidem aliis nominibus clarae , ita novum a Nobis quodammodo postulat propensae animi voluntatis documentum. Datum Romae apud S. Petrum sub Annulo Piscatoris die XIX Martii MDCCCLXXV. Pontificatus Nostri Anno XXIX.

LETTERS
By which the Abbot for the time being of St. Peter of Solesmes is granted in perpetuity the use of the Great Cape and a place among the Consultors of the Congregation of St. Rituals.
PIUS PP. IX. FOR THE MEMORY OF FUTURE TIMES

1 Among the ecclesiastical men whom this age of ours has produced, distinguished especially by religion, learning, and zeal and industry in advancing the Catholic cause, our beloved son Prosper Gueranger, Abbot of St. Peter of Solesmes, and supreme Master in Gaul of the Benedictine Congregation, is most justly to be numbered. He, endowed with excellent genius and most distinguished erudition, and renowned in knowledge of the Canonical Disciplines, directed his mind throughout the course of his long life to this end, that by the most weighty writings published, he might most strenuously defend the doctrine of the Catholic Church and the prerogatives of the Roman Pontiff, break the attempts of adversaries, and refute errors; and indeed, when We, with the applause of the Christian People, confirmed by solemn Decree the heavenly praise of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God, and most recently, when We sanctioned the Infallibility of the Roman Pontiff teaching from the Chair, approved by the most frequent assembly of the Bishops of the whole Catholic world, this same beloved son Prosper did not fail in the office of a Catholic writer, but rather, by publishing works most full of Faith and sacred learning, gave new testimony to the excellence of his genius and his unwavering reverence toward the Chair of Blessed Peter. But that in which he placed all his cares and thoughts most especially was this, that the Roman Liturgy should return to Gaul, as it were by restoration. In this matter he conducted himself in such a way that it is to be attributed to his writings, and to his singular constancy and industry beyond others, that before he himself departed from this life, all the dioceses of Gaul embraced the rite of the Roman Church. This life spent almost entirely in procuring the good of the Catholic name, as it were redounds into new splendor for the Benedictine Congregation existing in Gaul, sufficiently renowned by other titles, thus in some way demands from Us a new document of our propitious will. Since therefore from the Roman Pontiffs Our Predecessors there have proceeded very many examples left to Us for imitation, by which they always attached certain honors and offices to the members of certain Religious communities in such a way that they might draw greater spirit from them for cultivating Religion, obtaining the praise of wisdom, and exercising Christian virtues, hence it is that We, absolving each and all to whom these Our Letters are favorable from any excommunication and interdict, and from other ecclesiastical sentences, censures and penalties in any way and for any cause incurred, if perchance they have incurred any, considering them absolved for this reason alone, by Our own motion, with certain knowledge, and mature deliberation, and from the fullness of Our Apostolic power, will and decree that henceforth, for perpetual future times, the Abbot of St. Peter of Solesmes for the time being shall enjoy the use of the Great Cape, with the observance of what is to be observed, and that a place among the Consultors of the Congregation of Our Venerable Brethren the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over Sacred Rites, upon the succession of its vacancy for the time being, ought to be granted and assigned to one of the Monks of the Order of St. Benedict of the Cassinese Congregation, or if it has been otherwise granted and assigned by this Holy Apostolic See, let it be confirmed. We will, command, and decree these things, determining that these Our Letters shall always be firm, valid, and efficacious and shall be, and shall obtain and secure their full and complete effects, and shall most fully avail those to whom it pertains, and to whomever it shall pertain for the time being, and thus in the foregoing matters by any ordinary and delegated Judges, even the Auditors of the Apostolic Palace of causes, judgment and decision are to be rendered, and any attempt made contrary to these things by anyone whatsoever with any authority, knowingly or unknowingly, is to be rendered null and void. Notwithstanding the Constitutions and Apostolic Sanctions, and insofar as it is necessary, the Statutes and customs of the said Congregation also strengthened by oath, Apostolic confirmation, or any other firmness, and all other things to the contrary whatsoever. Given at Rome at St. Peter under the Fisherman's Ring on 19 March MDCCCLXXV. In the twenty-ninth year of Our Pontificate.
