2 Condemned and prohibited is the book with the title: Le nouveau Testament en francois, etc., or Abrégé de la morale de l'Évangile, etc. 3.

3 Clement, Pope XI, for the record of the future.

4 The care of the entire flock of the Lord, entrusted to our humility from heaven, urges us to add our voice 1 that we may diligently watch over the purity and integrity of the sacred scriptures, by which chiefly the Catholic Church is nourished and sustained, and that we permit not the souls of Christ's faithful, redeemed by His precious blood, to be deceived by the wicked and fallacious teachings of those who teach what is not fitting, or to be led away from the path of truth: for we are instructed by the salutary teachings of the ancient fathers that through the perverse interpretation of the presumptuous, the Gospel of Christ becomes the gospel of man, and tends to the seduction and ruin of God's people, especially if obstacles are placed in the way of the unwary under the pretext of piety, and the evil seeds of error are mixed, as it were tares among the wheat, with the Catholic faith.

5 Reference to no. 82. Since therefore, as we have learned, a certain book printed in the French language and distributed into several volumes has come into the hands of the faithful, under the title Le nouveau Testament en francois avec des réfléxions morales sur chaque verset, etc. — At Paris, 1693 and 1694. — Sold at Brussels by Eugène Henry Friex; and it has been reprinted many times, not without offense to the good and great peril to souls on account of its frequent reading and use in various provinces, as has likewise been reported to our apostolic office by the petitions of many; we have committed this book to be examined by some of our venerable brothers, cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, and other masters in sacred theology, with mature deliberation, as the gravity of the matter seemed to demand. And they, obedient to our mandates, after careful examination of the book itself, have judged by unanimous consent that it ought to be prohibited, inasmuch as it exhibits the sacred text of the New Testament damnably and not without reason recklessly corrupted, and in many respects conforms to another French version, which was long ago condemned by our predecessor Clement IX, of blessed memory, through certain letters of his issued in similar form as a Brief on 20 April 1668, and differs and deviates in many ways from the Vulgate edition, which by the use of so many centuries has been approved in the Church and ought to be held as authentic by all the orthodox, and contains moreover notes and observations which indeed have the appearance of piety, but subtly lead to the denial of its virtue, in which are found throughout seditious, rash, pernicious, and erroneous doctrines and propositions, some already condemned, and manifestly savoring of Jansenian heresy.

6 § 3. Hence it is that we, invested with the care of the flock and the duty of vigilance by the Lord, as far as it is granted to us from divine ordinance, being desirous to execute this office healthfully, with the counsel of the same cardinals, the aforesaid book, whether inscribed with the foregoing or any other title, wherever and in whatever other language or in any edition or version hitherto printed, or in the future (which God forbid) to be printed, by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, we condemn and reprobate, and the printing, copying, reading, retention and use of the same book to all and each of the Christian faithful, even those worthy of specific and individual mention and expression, under the penalty of excommunication to be incurred ipso facto by those acting contrary without any other declaration, from which no one by anyone (except by us, or the Roman Pontiff existing for the time being) unless constituted in the article of death, shall be able to obtain the benefit of absolution, we altogether forbid and prohibit. Willing, and by the same authority commanding, that whosoever shall have such a book in his possession, or shall have it at any time in the future, when these present letters shall become known to them, shall be bound to deliver and consign it to the Ordinaries of places or to the inquisitors of heretical depravity; and these shall take care that the copies thus delivered to them be immediately destroyed by fire: notwithstanding anything to the contrary in any clause. § 4. But in order that these same present letters may become known more easily to all, and no one may allege ignorance of them, we will, and by the aforesaid authority decree, that they be published at the doors of the basilica of the Prince of the Apostles and of the apostolic Chancery, as well as of the general Curia on the Citatory Hill, and in the open space of the Flower Field of the City, by one of our couriers, as is the custom, and copies thereof be left affixed there, so that thus published they may affect all and each whom they concern in the same manner as if they had been personally notified and intimated to each of them; and to the transcripts or copies of the same letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public notary, and furnished with the seal of a person established in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith shall be held everywhere both in judgment and outside it as would be held to these presents if they were exhibited or shown.
