ABBATINI, GUIDOBALDO. - Painter, b. at Città di Castello in 1600 or 1605, d. at Rome in 1656. After an education in his homeland that cannot be precisely determined, he came to Rome to the school of the Cavalier d'Arpino; afterward he was a collaborator, often a humble one, of Bernini. After the chiaroscuro works in the chapels of the crossing of St. Peter's, generically mannerist in character, he frescoed in the Vatican the Hall of Charlemagne and that of the Countess Matilda, the latter in collaboration with Romanelli. His manner benefits from Berninian suggestions, direct and indirect, in the vault of the Cornaro chapel in S. Maria della Vittoria and in that of the Pio chapel in S. Agostino, but elsewhere, as in the decoration of the sacristy of S. Spirito in Sassia, his last work, it falls back into the generic style of Cortona and Romanelli.
