ABBATINI, GUIDOBALDO. — Painter, born in Città di Castello in 1600 or 1605, died in Rome in 1656. After an unspecified education in his native city, he came to Rome and studied under the Cavalier d'Arpino; later he became a collaborator, often in a subordinate role, of Bernini. After executing the chiaroscuro works in the crossing chapels of St. Peter’s, which are generically mannerist in style, he painted in the Vatican the Sala di Carlomagno and the Sala della Contessa Matilde, the latter in collaboration with Romanelli. His manner draws on Bernini’s suggestions, both direct and indirect, evident in the vault of the Cornaro Chapel in S. Maria della Vittoria and in that of the Pio Chapel in S. Agostino, but elsewhere, as in the decoration of the sacristy of S. Spirito in Sassia—his last work—it lapses into the generic style of Cortona and Romanelli.
