AGENDA

AGENDA. — A Latin word meaning “what is to be done.” At first it was used in liturgy to denote the Canon of the Mass and indeed the entire Mass, according to canon 9 of the Council of Carthage (390): «Ab universis Episcopis dictum est: quisquis presbyter, si inconsulto episcopo, agendam in quolibet loco voluerit celebrare, ipse honori suo contrarius existit.» Later it came to signify the whole of the office and prayers for the dead: *a. mortuorum*. Eventually it was also applied to collections of prayers and ceremonies for the administration of the sacraments and sacramentalia, etc. (v. RITUALISTI).
