AGENDA

AGENDA. – A Latin word meaning “that which must be done.” At first it was used in the liturgy to indicate the Canon of the Mass and also the entire Mass, according to canon 9 of the Council of Carthage (390): “Ab universis Episcopis dictum est: quisquis presbyter, si inconsulto episcopo, agendam in quolibet loco voluerit celebrare, ipse honori suo contrarius ecaxit.” Later it denoted the entire office and prayers for the dead: a. mortuorum. Subsequently, collections of prayers and ceremonies for the administration of the sacraments, and of the sacraments, etc., were also called by this name (v. RITUALISTI).
