ALIGHIERI, JACOPO. - Son of the poet, he obtained in 1325 the revocation of the sentence of banishment and died in Florence in 1348. It is likely that he was, as Boccaccio transmits to us, "the most fervent" in the posthumous editorial care of his own "sister," the Commedia. Of this he wrote an epitome in verse and was the first to gloss the Inferno. Considering it, like his contemporaries, as a work of science and of faith, he strove to explain in the commentary the allegory of the three moral states of the soul. He also wrote the Dottrinale, a poem in which questions of morals, physics and politics are versified. Of interest are the recollections of certain doctrines of his father and the defenses of him against the accusation of heresy, repeated in a canzone of his addressed to the Pope and the Emperor.
