ANASTASIUS the Younger, St. — Patriarch of Antioch (599–610), successor of Anastasius the Elder. A letter from St. Gregory the Great addressed to him shows that Anastasius, upon his election, hastened to inform the Pope and at the same time declared his adherence to the orthodox faith.
A friend of the great Pontiff, he translated the Liber regulae pastoralis into Greek, as the Pope himself attests; however, this translation has not come down to us. He met his death in September 610 during a Jewish uprising, during which his body was horribly mutilated and burned. The Roman Martyrology lists him among the martyrs on December 21.
