ANASTASIO the YOUNGER, saint. — Patriarch of Antioch (599–610), successor of Anastasio the Elder. A letter from St Gregory the Great addressed to him shows that A., immediately after his election, hastened to notify the Pope, declaring at the same time his adherence to the orthodox faith.
A friend of the great Pontiff, he translated the Liber regulae pastoralis into Greek, as the same Pope states; but this translation has not survived. He met his death in September 610, during an uprising of Jews, by whom his body was horribly mutilated and burned. The Roman Martyrology lists him among the martyrs on 21 December.
