ANASTASIUS THE YOUNGER, Saint. - Patriarch of Antioch (599-610), successor of Anastasius the Elder. A letter of St. Gregory the Great addressed to him shows that A., as soon as he was elected, hastened to give notice of it to the Pope, declaring at the same time his adherence to the orthodox faith.

A friend of the great Pontiff, he translated into Greek the Liber regulae pastoralis, as the Pope himself states; but this translation has not come down to us. He met his death in Sept. 610, during an uprising of Jews, by whom his body was horribly mutilated and burned. The Roman Martyrology counts him among the martyrs on 21 Dec.
