ARRAES (Arrais, Arraiz) de Mendoza, Amador. - Portuguese Carmelite writer, b. of a noble family at Beja in 1530, d. at Coimbra on 1 August 1600. Having entered the Carmel of Lisbon on 24 January 1545, after a year he made his profession at Coimbra. Because of the fame he quickly acquired, he was appointed preacher to King Sebastian. Cardinal dom Henrique, archbishop of Evora, requested him as his coadjutor, and Gregory XIII named him titular bishop of Adrumetum in 1578, afterwards transferring him to the titular see of Tripoli. Philip II, in 1581, wanted him as bishop of Portalegre, where A. distinguished himself by his activity in apostolate and charity; he ransomed his diocesans who had been taken prisoner after the defeat of Alcacer-Kibir (1578), and labored selflessly during the plague that raged in 1583. He renounced the bishopric in 1596 and retired to the convent of Coimbra.
He wrote the Didlogos, which comprise ten conversations on religious, moral and historical subjects (Coimbra 1589; 2nd enlarged ed., 1604; Lisbon 1846). It is a doctrinal and literary masterpiece, still considered today a model of style, balance and feeling.
