BACCINELLI, GIUSEPPE. - Discalced Carmelite, in religion BERNARDINO DI S. TERESA, missionary and bishop; born in Rome (15 March 1807), where he professed on 8 December 1824; went to Malabar in 1833, where he served as rector of the Syro-Malabar seminary at Verapoly (1833-36 and 1839-46) and as parish priest of Verapoly (1835) and Cunea (1836-39). When, in 1845, Malabar was divided into three vicariates (Verapoly, Mangalore, Quilon), he was appointed pro-vicar of Quilon (1847). From 1853 he was coadjutor of the apostolic vicar of Verapoly and administrator of Quilon until 1859, when he assumed governance of Verapoly with the title of archbishop of Farsala. To promote the education of the indigenous clergy, he consolidated the small Syro-Malabar seminaries into a central seminary at Puthenpally (1866); he introduced popular missions and spiritual exercises and established a Regular Third Order among the indigenous clergy according to the Carmelite rule (1855, 1860). He died at Verapoly on 5 September 1868.
