BAILLET (BALLYET), BRUNE. - Discalced Carmelite (in religion Emmanuel of St. Albert); b. 21 Nov. 1702 at Marnay (Besançon, France), d. at Baghdad on 4 Apr. 1773. Ordained a priest, he entered the seminary of the missions in Rome, whence in 1828 he went to Baghdad. The bishop of the time, Varlet, having been excommunicated as a supporter of Jansenism, in 1733 B. was elected vicar apostolic of Babylonia, and on the death of the titular (1742) he was elevated to that see; moreover the king of France elected him consul of Baghdad (1741). He died of plague, together with all his missionaries. He addressed an interesting report De initio, progressu, et praesenti statu Dioecesis et Missionis Babyloniae to Benedict XIV (printed at Rome in 1754).
