BAILLET (BALLYET), BRUNE. — Discalced Carmelite (in religion EMANUELE DI S. ALBERTO); b. 21 Nov. 1702 at Marnay (Besançon, France), d. at Baghdad 4 Apr. 1773. Ordained priest, he entered the seminary of the missions in Rome, whence in 1828 he went to Baghdad. Since the then bishop, Varlet, had been excommunicated for Jansenist leanings, in 1733 B. was elected Apostolic Vicar of Babylon, and on the death of the incumbent (1742) was raised to that see; moreover, the King of France appointed him consul at Baghdad (1741). He died of the plague, together with all his missionaries. He drew up an interesting report De initio, progressu, et praesenti statu Dioecesis et Missionis Babyloniae addressed to Benedict XIV (printed in Rome in 1754).
