BALDASSARRE OF SAINT MARY. - Discalced Carmelite (secular name B. de Azevedo), missionary, a native of Lisbon (1590). Having taken the habit in Rome (1608), he was sent to Persia (1615), where he devoted himself for many years to the translation of the Gospels into that language. Two codices of his survive in the Vatican Library (Persian manuscripts), of which one (no. 57) contains sacred discourses in Persian, and the other (no. 6) a Persian-Tuscan vocabulary. He died in mission in 1662.
