BALDASSARI, Pietro. — He served as secretary from 1794 to Monsignor Diego Innico Caracciolo, governor of Fermo, and later as chamberlain to Pius VI, whom he accompanied in 1788 when the pope was transferred to Florence, then to Grenoble, and finally to Valence.
Having settled in Naples together with Caracciolo, who had been named cardinal, Baldassari wrote an account that he published in Modena in four volumes under the title: *Relazione delle avversità e patimenti del glorioso papa Pio VI negli ultimi tre anni del suo pontificato* (1840–43), a work of primary historical importance. In 1839, a French edition appeared in Paris under the title *Histoire de l'enlèvement et de la captivité de Pie VI* by the Abbé B., an anticipation of the Italian edition.
