BALDUINO, BALDUINO. — Professor of medicine at the University of Bologna, born around 1500 in Barga (Garfagnana), died in 1582 at Aversa. He was protected by Cardinal Del Monte and accompanied him to the Council of Trent. When the cardinal was elected Pope under the name of Julius III, he summoned him to his side as archiatrist and entrusted him with important political missions in Europe; the truce between Henry II and Philip II was attributed to B.’s work.
He was appointed bishop of Mariana in Corsica (17 December 1550) and then of Aversa (30 May 1554), where he introduced important reforms. Accused under Pius IV and imprisoned in Rome, he was released after four years and was able to return to the government of the diocese.
