BALDUINO, BALDUINO. – Professor of medicine at the University of Bologna, born around 1500 in Barga (Garfagnana), died in 1582 in Aversa. He was protected by Cardinal Del Monte and accompanied him to the Council of Trent. When the cardinal was elected Pope under the name of Julius III, he summoned Balduino to his side as his personal physician and entrusted him with important political missions in Europe; the truce between Henry II and Philip II is attributed to Balduino’s efforts.
He was appointed Bishop of Mariana in Corsica (17 December 1550) and later of Aversa (30 May 1554), where he introduced significant reforms. Accused under Pius IV and imprisoned in Rome, he was released after four years and was able to return to govern his diocese.
