AUNACARIO (Aunario), Saint. - From a noble family, educated at the court of Gontran, king of Burgundy, he was admitted to the sacred Orders by Siagrius, bishop of Autun. Raised to the episcopal see of Auxerre (561), he took part in the Synod of Paris of 573 and in those of Mâcon of 583 and 585, and he himself gathered a council in his see (c. 578), of which 45 very important canons survive (PL 72, 761-68), aimed at the restoration of the discipline of the clergy and the extirpation of pagan superstitions. He died in 605. From him there remains a letter to an African priest, Stephen, in which he begs him to rewrite the life of his predecessors Amator and Germanus. There also exist two letters of Pelagius II addressed to him in 580 and 585 (Jaffé-Wattenbach, 1048, 1058). Toward the end of his episcopate, a cleric of Auxerre gave the Hieronymian Martyrology the form that it still preserves today. Feast on September 25.
