BARBIERI, GIUSEPPE. - Preacher, b. at Bassano Veneto in 1774 and d. at Padua in 1852. He was a Benedictine monk and a professor at the University of Padua, where he succeeded Cesarotti in the chair of Latin and Greek eloquence.

An orator of wide renown, he brought to the pulpit a distinctly secular note in his picturesque and naturalistic descriptions, drawing especially on Buffon's Natural History. In his warm utterance one can detect sure influences of the French writers and preachers, such as Pascal, Bossuet, Fénelon, and Massillon, who was very familiar to him. In the Orazioni quaresimali (Milan 1836) one hears the echo of his poetic compositions, especially of the Stagioni, in which he indulged the fashion that looked to Thomson and to St-Lambert. His love for his country and for the people brought him censures and persecutions. He won enthusiastic applause and severe criticism in the cities where he went to preach, particularly in Florence.
