CITTADELLA VIGODARZERE, ANDREA. - Born on 15 July 1804 in Treviso, died on 19 March 1870 in Florence, he devoted himself to legal studies. He knew Abbot Giuseppe Barbieri, a noted orator, who influenced his spiritual formation and instilled in him a lively religious feeling: the C. drew inspiration from him as a poet, publishing in 1831 Sonetti sulle orazioni sacre dell'abate Giuseppe Barbieri.
He was among the most passionate supporters of the founding of infant asylums, and composed Canti (Padua 1856) for the children sheltered there. When the Associazione nazionale per la fondazione degli asili rurali was established in 1866, the C., together with other fellow citizens, addressed an appeal to the people of Padua, urging them to take to heart the conditions of childhood in the countryside. Of patriotic sentiments, yet averse to sectarian and extremist attitudes, in June 1848 he was commander of the National Guard of Padua. Once Austrian rule was re-established in the Lombardo-Veneto, the C. went to Vienna to advise the granting of administrative autonomies to the Italian provinces. After the appointment of Archduke Maximilian as governor-general, the C. became his listened-to adviser, influencing the liberal attitudes of the brother of Francis Joseph. After 1866 he was a deputy and senator in the Italian Parliament.
