BARBIERI (DE BARBERIS), FILIPPO. — Dominican theologian, born in Syracuse c. 1426, died in Palermo in 1487. He taught theology in Catania. From 1476 to 1486 he served as general inquisitor in Sicily, Sardinia, and Malta. Highly esteemed at the Roman Curia and the Aragonese court, he was honored with the friendship of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, who granted him an annual lifetime pension.
He wrote several theological works in elegant Latin; in his most important work, *De animarum immortalitate, divina providentia, mundi gubernatione et hominum praedestinatione atque reprobatione* (1st ed., Rome 1475), he upholds the Thomist doctrine of predestination *ante praevia merita*.
