POTAMIAENA AND BASILIDES, Saints, Martyrs. - They are commemorated in the Martyrologies on June 28 and June 30 respectively, but they belong to the group of Plutarch (v.).

The daughter of Marcella, who also fell as a martyr, P. was arrested in Alexandria under Septimius Severus; after being horribly tormented over her whole body, she was condemned to capital punishment by the judge Aquila. While she was being led to execution, B., one of the soldiers escorting her, out of a sense of pity defended her from the outrages of the mob. P. promised him that after her death she would pray for him. A few days after P. had been killed by having boiling pitch dripped over her body, B. refused to take an oath, saying that he was a Christian. Imprisoned, he told some Christians who came to visit him that P. had appeared to him, had placed a crown on his head, and had assured him that he would soon receive the favor he had asked of her for him. He was immediately baptized and the next day beheaded.
