BENEDICT I, Pope. - He is believed to have been elected shortly after the death of John III (d. July 13, 574), but he was not consecrated until June 3, 575. He was Roman, the son of a certain Boniface. He reigned for four years, embittered by the first incursions of the Lombards and by famine. Justin II did not accept the invitation made to him by the patrician Pamphronius on behalf of Rome and the Pope to send military aid to defend the City, threatened by the Lombards (579); it seems, however, that on that occasion the emperor sent the precious reliquary cross, today preserved in the treasury of St. Peter's. B. approved the Fifth Ecumenical Council, the Second Council of Constantinople, of 553. He ordained 15 priests, 3 deacons and 21 bishops (Liber Pontificalis, ed. L. Duchesne, I, Rome 1886, p. 308). The two or three letters attributed to him (PL 72, 683 ff.) are not authentic. He died in Rome, "immersed in sorrow and tribulation," as we read in the Liber Pontificalis, on July 30, 579, and was laid to rest in the sacristy of the old St. Peter's.
