BLUDAU, AUGUSTIN. - New Testament exegete and philologist, b. 6 March 1862 at Guttstadt in East Prussia, d. Bishop of Ermland on 9 Feb. 1930 at Frauenberg, his episcopal residence. Ordained priest in 1887, he was subsequently chaplain at Marienwerder, took his degree (1891) in theology at Münster, and then became chaplain and, from 1894, vice-rector of the seminary at Braunsberg. Professor of New Testament exegesis at Münster from 1895, co-editor from 1907 to 1909 of the Theologische Revue, he was elected Bishop of Ermland on 26 Nov. 1908 and consecrated on 20 June 1909.
B.’s scholarly importance lies in the textual criticism of the New Testament. He published extensively on the subject and also wrote notable studies on the Greek version of Daniel (1897), on the Jews of Alexandria (1906), on Eteria (1927), etc. Particularly noteworthy are his articles on the Comma Ioannaeum (I Io. 5, 7b-8a), which may have contributed to the modification of the decree of the Holy Office concerning the « Comma Joannaeum » of 13 Jan. 1897, effected on 2 June 1927.
