BLUDAU, AUGUSTIN. - New Testament exegete and philologist, b. 6 March 1862 at Guttstadt in East Prussia, d. as bishop of Ermland on 9 Feb. 1930, at Frauenberg, his residential see. Ordained priest in 1887, he was then chaplain at Marienwerder, took his doctorate (1891) in theology at Münster, then was chaplain and from 1894 vice-rector of the seminary at Braunsberg. Professor of New Testament exegesis at Münster from 1895, co-editor from 1907 to 1909 of the Theologische Revue, on 26 Nov. 1908 he was elected bishop of Ermland, and consecrated on 20 June 1909.

B.'s scientific importance lies in the textual criticism of the New Testament. He published much on the subject, and also wrote notable studies on the Greek version of Daniel (1897), on the Jews at Alexandria (1906), on Etheria (1927), etc. Especially to be noted are his articles on the Comma Ioannaeum (1 Jn. 5:7b-8a), which perhaps contributed to the modification of the decree of the Holy Office on the « Comma Joannaeum » of 13 Jan. 1897, which came about on 2 June 1927.
