Christ heals on the sabbath the man languishing thirty-eight years. His discourse upon this occasion.

1After these things was a festival day of the Jews: and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.Dopo questo essendo la festa de' Giudei, Gesù se n'andò a Gerusalemme.AFTER these things there vvas a festiual day of the Ievves, and IESVS vvent vp to Hierusalem.Post hæc erat dies festus Judæorum, et ascendit Jesus Jerosolymam. 2Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.E havvi in Gerusalemme la piscina probatica, che in lingua Ebrea si chiama Betsaida, la quale ha cinque porticati. And there is at Hierusalem `vpon' Probatica a pond vvhich in hebrevv is surnamed Bethsaida', hauing fiue porches. 3In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered: waiting for the moving of the water. In these lay a great multitude of sicke persons, of blinde, lame, vvithered, expecting the stirring of the vvater. In his jacebat multitudo magna languentium, cæcorum, claudorum, aridorum, exspectantium aquæ motum. 4And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water was made whole of whatsoever infirmity he lay under. And an Angel of our Lord descended at a certaine time into the pond: and the vvater vvas stirred. And he that had gone dovvne first into the pond after the stirring of the vvater, vvas made vvhole of vvhatsoeuer infirmitie he vvas holden. 5And there was a certain man there that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity. And there vvas a certaine man there that had been eight and thirtie yeres in his infirmitie. 6Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?E Gesù mirato avendo costui, che se ne stava a giacere, e conoscendo, che era di età avanzata, gli disse: Vuoi tu essere risanato?Him vvhen IESVS had seen lying, & knevv that he had novv a long time, he saith to him, Vvilt thou be made vvhole?

7The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.Risposegli l'infermo: Signore, io non ho uomo, che mi getti nella piscina, quando l'acqua è agitata: il perché quando io mi vi accosto, un altro vi scende prima di me.The sicke man ansvvered him, Lord, I haue no man, vvhen the vvater is troubled, to put me into the pond. For vvhiles I come, an other goeth dovvne before me.Respondit ei languidus: Domine, hominem non habeo, ut, cum turbata fuerit aqua, mittat me in piscinam: dum venio enim ego, alius ante me descendit. 8Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed and walk.Dissegli Gesù: Alzati, prendi il tuo letticciuolo, e cammina.IESVS saith to him, Arise, take vp thy bed, and vvalke. 9And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.E in quell'istante colui diventò sano, prese il suo letticciuolo, e camminava. Or quel di era sabato. And forthvvith he vvas made vvhole: and he tooke vp his bed, and vvalked. And it vvas the Sabboth that day. 10The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath. It is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed. The Ievves therfore said to him that vvas healed, It is the Sabboth, thou maist not take vp thy bed. 11He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me: Take up thy bed and walk. He ansvvered them, He that made me vvhole, he said to me, Take vp thy bed, and vvalke.Respondit eis: Qui me sanum fecit, ille mihi dixit: Tolle grabatum tuum et ambula. 12They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee: Take up thy bed and walk? They asked him therfore, Vvhat is that man that said to thee, Take vp thy bed, and vvalke?Interrogaverunt ergo eum: Quis est ille homo qui dixit tibi: Tolle grabatum tuum et ambula ? 13But he who was healed knew not who it was: for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place. But he that vvas made vvhole, knevv not vvho it vvas. For IESVS shronke aside from the multitude standing in the place. Is autem qui sanus fuerat effectus, nesciebat quis esset. Jesus enim declinavit a turba constituta in loco.

14Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. Aftervvard IESVS findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold thou art made vvhole: sinne no more, lest some vvorse thing chaunce to thee.Postea invenit eum Jesus in templo, et dixit illi: Ecce sanus factus es; jam noli peccare, ne deterius tibi aliquid contingat. 15The man went his way and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.Quegli andò a dar nuova a' Giudei, come Gesù era quello, che l'avea risanato. That man vvent his vvay, and told the Ievves that it vvas IESVS that made him vvhole. 16Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath. Therevpon the Ievves persecuted IESVS, because he did these things on the Sabboth.Propterea persequebantur Judæi Jesum, quia hæc faciebat in sabbato. 17But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work. But IESVS ansvvered them, My father vvorketh vntil novv: and I doe vvorke. 18Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.Per questo sempre più i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo: mentre non solo rompeva il sabato, ma di più diceva, che Dio era il Padre suo, facendosi eguale a Dio. Rispose adunque Gesù, e disse loro:Therevpō therefore the Ievves sought the more to kil him: because he did not only breake the Sabboth, but also he said God was his father, making him self aequal to God.Propterea ergo magis quærebant eum Judæi interficere: quia non solum solvebat sabbatum, sed et patrem suum dicebat Deum, æqualem se faciens Deo. Respondit itaque Jesus, et dixit eis: 19Then Jesus answered and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner. In verità, in verità vi dico: Non può il Figliuolo far da se cosa alcuna, se non l'ha veduta fare dal Padre: imperocché quello, che questi fa, lo fa parimente il Figliuolo.IESVS therfore ansvvered, and said to them, Amen, amen I say to you, The Sonne can not doe any thing of him self, but that vvhich he seeth the Father doing. For vvhat things soeuer he doeth, these the Sonne also doeth in like maner.

20For the Father loveth the Son and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder. For the Father loueth the Sonne, and shevveth him al things that him self doeth, and greater vvorkes then these vvil he shevv him, that you may marueil. 21For as the Father raiseth up the dead and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will. For as the Father doth raise the dead and quickeneth: so the Sonne also quickeneth vvhom he vvil. 22For neither does the Father judge any man: but hath given all judgment to the Son.Imperocché il Padre non giudica alcuno: ma ha rimesso interamente nel Figliuolo il far giudizio,For neither doth the Father iudge any man: but al iudgement he hath giuen to the Sonne,Neque enim Pater judicat quemquam: sed omne judicium dedit Filio, 23That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father who hath sent him.Affinchè tutti onorino il Figliuolo, come onorano il Padre: chi non onora il Figliuolo, non onora il Padre, che lo ha mandato.that al may honour the Sonne, as they doe honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Sonne, doth not honour the Father, vvho sent him.ut omnes honorificent Filium, sicut honorificant Patrem; qui non honorificat Filium, non honorificat Patrem, qui misit illum. 24Amen, amen, I say unto you that he who heareth my word and believeth him that sent me hath life everlasting: and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. Amen, amen I say to you, that he vvhich heareth my vvord, and beleeueth him that sent me, hath life euerlasting. and he commeth not into iudgement, but shal passe' from death into life.Amen, amen dico vobis, quia qui verbum meum audit, et credit ei qui misit me, habet vitam æternam, et in judicium non venit, sed transiit a morte in vitam. 25Amen, amen, I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. Amen, amen I say to you, that the houre commeth, and novv it is, vvhen the dead shal heare the voice of the Sonne of God, and they that haue heard, shal liue.

26For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given to the Son also to have life in himself.Imperocché siccome il Padre ha in se stesso la vita: così ha dato al Figliuolo l'avere in se stesso la vita:For as the Father hath life in him self: so he hath giuen to the Sonne also to haue life in him self:Sicut enim Pater habet vitam in semetipso, sic dedit et Filio habere vitam in semetipso: 27And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.E gli ha dato podestà di far giudizio in quanto è Figliuolo dell'uomo.and he hath giuē him povver to doe iudgement also, because he is the Sonne of man.et potestatem dedit ei judicium facere, quia Filius hominis est. 28Wonder not at this: for the hour cometh wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.Non vi stupite di questo, perché verrà tempo, in cui tutti quelli, che sono ne' sepolcri, udiranno la voce del Figliuolo di Dio:Marueil not at this, because the houre commeth vvherein al that are in the graues, shal heare his voice,Nolite mirari hoc, quia venit hora in qua omnes qui in monumentis sunt audient vocem Filii Dei: 29And they that have done good things shall come forth unto the resurrection of life: but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.E usciranno fuora quelli, che avranno fatto opere buone, risorgendo per vivere: quegli poi, che avran fatto opere male, risorgendo per essere condannati.and they that haue done good things, shal come forth into the resurrection of life: but they that haue done euil, into the resurrection of iudgement.et procedent qui bona fecerunt, in resurrectionem vitæ; qui vero mala egerunt, in resurrectionem judicii. 30I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge. And my judgment is just: because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.Non posso io fare da me cosa alcuna. I can not of my self doe any thing. As I heare, so I iudge: and my iudgement is iust. because I seeke not my vvil, but the vvil of him that sent me.Non possum ego a meipso facere quidquam. Sicut audio, judico: et judicium meum justum est, quia non quæro voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem ejus qui misit me. 31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. If I giue testimonie of my self, my testimonie is not true. 32There is another that beareth witness of me: and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.Evvi un altro, che rende a ne testimonianza: e so, che è idonea la testimonianza, che egli a me rende. There is an other that giueth testimonie of me: and I knovv that the testimonie is true vvhich he giueth of me.Alius est qui testimonium perhibet de me: et scio quia verum est testimonium, quod perhibet de me.

33You sent to John: and he gave testimony to the truth. You sent to Iohn: and he gaue testimonie to the truth. 34But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved. But I receiue not testimonie of man: but I say these things that you may be saued. 35He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. He vvas the lampe burning and shining. And you vvould for a time reioyce in his light. 36But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect, the works themselves which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.Io però ho una testimonianza maggiore di quella di Giovanni. But I haue a greater testimonie then Iohn. For the vvorkes vvhich the Father hath giuen me to perfit them: the very vvorkes them selues vvhich I doe, giue testimonie of me, that the Father hath sent me.Ego autem habeo testimonium majus Joanne. Opera enim quæ dedit mihi Pater ut perficiam ea: ipsa opera, quæ ego facio, testimonium perhibent de me, quia Pater misit me: 37And the Father himself who hath sent me hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.E il Padre, che mi ha mandato, egli stesso ha resa testimonianza a favor mio: e voi ne avete udita giammai la sua voce, né veduto il suo volto. And the Father that sent me, him self hath giuen testimonie of me. neither haue you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape,et qui misit me Pater, ipse testimonium perhibuit de me: neque vocem ejus umquam audistis, neque speciem ejus vidistis: 38And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.E non avete abitante in voi la sua parola: perché non credete a chi egli ha mandato.and his vvord you haue not remaining in you: because vvhom he hath sent, him you beleeue not.et verbum ejus non habetis in vobis manens: quia quem misit ille, huic vos non creditis. 39Search the scriptures: for you think in them to have life everlasting. And the same are they that give testimony of me.Voi andate investigando le Scritture, perché credete di avere in esse la vita eterna: e queste sono quelle, che parlano a favor mio:Search the scriptures, for you thinke in them to haue life euerlasting: and the same are they that giue testimonie of me:Scrutamini Scripturas, quia vos putatis in ipsis vitam æternam habere: et illæ sunt quæ testimonium perhibent de me:

40And you will not come to me that you may have life.E non volete venir a me per aver vita.and you vvil not come to me that you may haue life.et non vultis venire ad me ut vitam habeatis. 41I receive not glory from men. Glorie of men I receiue not.Claritatem ab hominibus non accipio. 42But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you. But I haue knovven you, that the loue of God you haue not in you. 43I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. I am come in the name of my Father, and you receiue me not: if an other shal come in his ovvne name, him you vvil receiue. 44How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek? Hovv can you beleeue, that receiue glorie one of an other: and the glorie vvhich is of God only, you seeke not?Quomodo vos potestis credere, qui gloriam ab invicem accipitis, et gloriam quæ a solo Deo est, non quæritis ? 45Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust. Thinke not that I vvil accuse you to the Father. there is that accuseth you, Moyses, in vvhom you trust.Nolite putare quia ego accusaturus sim vos apud Patrem: est qui accusat vos Moyses, in quo vos speratis. 46For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also: for he wrote of me.Imperocché se credeste a Mosè, a me ancora credeste: conciossiaché di me egli ha scritto. For if you did beleeue Moyses: you vvould perhaps beleeue me also, for of me he hath vvritten. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? And if you doe not beleeue his vvritings: hovv vvil you beleeue my vvordes?
