Christ teaches his disciples to pray. He casts out a dumb devil, confutes the Pharisees, and pronounces woes against them for their hypocrisy.

1And it came to pass that as he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.E avvenne, che essendo egli in un luogo a fare orazione, finito che ebbe, uno dei suoi discepoli gli disse: Signore, insegnaci ad orare, come anche Giovanni insegnò a' suoi discepoli.AND it came to passe, vvhen he vvas in a certaine place, praying, as he ceased, one of his Disciples said to him, Lord teach vs to pray, as Iohn also taught his Disciples. 2And he said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. And he said them, Vvhen you pray, say, FATHER, sanctified be thy name. Thy kingdom come,Et ait illis: Cum oratis, dicite: Pater, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum. 3Give us this day our daily bread.Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano. Our daily bread giue vs this day,Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie. 4And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.E rimettici i nostri debiti; mentre anche noi li rimettiamo a chiunque è a noi debitore. E non c'indurre in tentazione.and forgiue vs our sinnes, for because our selues also doe forgiue euery one that is in debt to vs, And lead vs not into temptation.Et dimitte nobis peccata nostra, siquidem et ipsi dimittimus omni debenti nobis. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem. 5And he said to them: Which of you shall have a friend and shall go to him at midnight and shall say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves,E disse loro: Chi di voi avrà un amico, e anderà da lui a mezzanotte, dicendogli: Amico, prestami tre pani,And he said to them, Vvhich of you shal haue a frende, and shal goe to him at midnight, and shal say to him, Frende, lend me three loaues,Et ait ad illos: Quis vestrum habebit amicum, et ibit ad illum media nocte, et dicet illi: Amice, commoda mihi tres panes, 6Because a friend of mine is come off his journey to me and I have not what to set before him.Perché un amico mio è arrivato di viaggio a mia casa, e non ho niente da dargli;because a frende of mine is come out of his way to me, and I haue not what to set before him:quoniam amicus meus venit de via ad me, et non habeo quod ponam ante illum, 7And he from within should answer and say: Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee.E quegli rispondendo di dentro, dica: Non mi inquietare: la porta è già chiusa, e i miei figliuoli sono coricati meco, non posso levarmi per darteli.& he from vvithin ansvvering saith, Trouble me not, novv the doore is shut, and my children are vvith me in bed: I can not rise and giue thee.et ille de intus respondens dicat: Noli mihi molestus esse, jam ostrium clausum est, et pueri mei mecum sunt in cubili: non possum surgere, et dare tibi.

8Yet if he shall continue knocking, I say to you, although he will not rise and give him because he is his friend; yet, because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And if he shal perseuêre knocking, I say to you, although he vvil not rise and giue him because he is his frende, yet for his importunitie he vvil rise, and giue him as many as he needeth. 9And I say to you: Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you.E io dico a voi: Chiedete, e vi sarà dato: Cercate, e troverete: Picchiate, e saravvi aperto. And I say to you, Aske, and it shal be giuen you: seeke, and you shal finde: knocke, and it shal be opened to you.Et ego dico vobis: Petite, et dabitur vobis; quærite, et invenietis; pulsate, et aperietur vobis. 10For every one that asketh receiveth: and he that seeketh findeth: and to him that knocketh it shall be opened:Imperocché chi chiede, riceve: e chi cerca, trova: e a chi picchia, sarà aperto. For euery one that asketh, receiueth: and he that seeketh, findeth: and to him that knocketh, it shal be opened. 11And which of you, if he ask his father bread, will he give him a stone? And vvhich of you if he aske his father bread, vvil he giue him a stone? or a fish, vvil he for a fish giue him a serpent?Quis autem ex vobis patrem petit panem, numquid lapidem dabit illi ? aut piscem, numquid pro pisce serpentem dabit illi ? 12Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion?E se chiederà un uovo: gli darà egli uno scorpione?Or if he aske an egge, vvil he reach him a scorpion?aut si petierit ovum, numquid porriget illi scorpionem ? 13If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him? If you then being naught, knovv hovv to giue good giftes to your children, hovv much more vvil your father from heauen giue the good spirit to them that aske him?Si ergo vos, cum sitis mali, nostis bona data dare filiis vestris: quanto magis Pater vester de cælo dabit spiritum bonum petentibus se ?

14And he was casting out a devil: and the same was dumb. And when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes, were in admiration at it.E stava cacciando un demonio, il quale era mutolo. And he vvas casting out a deuil, and that vvas dumme. And vvhen he had cast out the deuil, the dumme spake: and the multitudes marueiled. 15But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils. And certaine of them said, In Beel-zebub the prince of Deuils he casteth out Deuils. 16And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven.E altri per tentarlo gli chiedevano un segno dal cielo. And other tempting, asked of him a signe from heauen.Et alii tentantes, signum de cælo quærebant ab eo. 17But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation; and house upon house shall fall. But he seeing their cogitations, said to them, Euery kingdom deuided against it self, shal be made desolate, and house vpon house, shal fall. 18And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because you say that through Beelzebub I cast out devils. And if Satan also be deuided against him self, hovv shal his kingdom stand? because you say that in Beel-zebub I doe cast out Deuils. 19Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges. And if I in Beel-zebub cast out Deuils: your children, in vvhom doe they cast out? therfore they shal be your iudges.Si autem ego in Beelzebub ejicio dæmonia: filii vestri in quo ejiciunt ? ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt.

20But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you.Che se io col dito di Dio caccio i demonj: certamente è venuto a voi il regno di Dio.But if I in the finger of God doe cast out Deuils: surely the kingdom of God is come vpon you.Porro si in digito Dei ejicio dæmonia: profecto pervenit in vos regnum Dei. 21When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth. Vvhen the strong armed keepeth his court: those things are in peace that he possesseth. 22But if a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted and will distribute his spoils. But if a stronger then he, come vpon him and ouercome him: he vvil take avvay his vvhole armour vvherein he trusted, and vvil distribute his spoiles. 23He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. He that is not vvith me, is against me: and he that gathereth not vvith me, scattereth. 24When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out. Vvhen the vncleane spirit shal depart out of a man, he vvandereth through places vvithout vvater, seeking rest. And not finding, he saith, I vvil returne into my house vvhence I departed. 25And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.E andatovi, la trova spazzata, e adorna. And vvhen he is come, he findeth it svvept vvith a besome, and trimmed. 26Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. Then he goeth and taketh seuen other spirits vvorse then him self, and entring in they dvvel there. And the last of that man be made vvorse then the first.

27And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee and the paps that gave thee suck.E avvenne, che mentre egli tali cose diceva, alzò la voce una donna di mezzo alle turbe, e gli disse: Beato il seno, che ti ha portato, e le mammelle, che hai succhiate. And came to passe: vvhen he said these things, a certaine vvoman lifting vp her voice out of the multitude said to him, Blessed is the vvombe that bare thee, and the pappes that thou didst sucke. 28But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.Ma egli disse: Anzi beati coloro, che ascoltano la parola di Dio, e l'osservano. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that heare the vvord of God, and keepe it.At ille dixit: Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud. 29And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation. It asketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.E affollandosi intorno a lui le turbe, cominciò a dire: Questa generazione è una perversa generazione: domanda un segno; ma segno non saralle concesso, fuori di quello di Giona profeta. And the multitudes running together, he began to say, This generation, is a vvicked generation: it asketh a signe, and a signe shal not be giuen it but the signe of Ionas the Prophet. 30For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation. For as Ionas vvas a signe to the Niniuites: so shal the Sonne of man also be to this generation. 31The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold more than Solomon here. The Queene of the South shal rise in the iudgement vvith the men of this generation, and shal condemne them: because she came from the endes of the earth to heare the vvisedom of Salomon. and behold, more then Salomon here.

32The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it; Because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold more than Jonas here.I Niniviti si leveranno suso nel giudizio contro di questa generazione, e la condanneranno: perché essi fecero penitenza alla predicazione di Giona, ed ecco qui più che Giona. The men of Niniuee shal rise in the iudgement vvith this generation, and shal condemne it, because they did penance at the preaching of Ionas. and behold, more then Ionas here. 33No man lighteth a candle and putteth it in a hidden place, nor under a bushel: but upon a candlestick, that they that come in may see the light. No man lighteth a candel, and putteth it in secrete, neither vnder a bushel: but vpon a candlesticke, that they that goe in may see the light. 34The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome. The candel of thy body, is thine eie. If thine eie be simple, thy vvhole body shal be lightsome: but if it be naught, thy body also shal be darkesome. 35Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. See therfore that the light vvhich is in thee, be not darkenesse.Vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est, tenebræ sint. 36If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness: the whole shall be lightsome and, as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee. If then thy vvhole body be lightsome, hauing no part of darkenesse: it shal be lightsome vvholy, and as a bright candel it shal lighten thee.Si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit, non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum, erit lucidum totum, et sicut lucerna fulgoris illuminabit te.

37And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him that he would dine with him. And vvhen he vvas speaking, a certaine Pharisee desired him that he vvould dine vvith him. and he going in sate dovvne to eate. 38And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner. And the Pharisee began to thinke vvithin him self and to say, Vvhy he vvas not vvashed before dinner. 39And the Lord said to him: Now you, Pharisees, make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter: but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity.E il Signore gli disse; Ora voi, o Farisei, lavate il di fuori del bicchiere, e del piatto: ma il vostro di dentro è pieno di rapine, e iniquità.And our Lord said to him, Novv you Pharisees doe make cleane that on the out side of the cuppe and of the platter: but that of yours vvhich is vvithin, is ful of rapine and iniquitie. 40Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make also that which is within? Fooles, did not he that made that on the outside, make that also that is on the inside?Stulti nonne qui fecit quod deforis est, etiam id quod deintus est fecit ? 41But yet that which remaineth, give alms: and behold, all things are clean unto you. But yet that that remaineth, giue almes, & behold al things are cleane vnto you. 42But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb and pass over judgment and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone. But vvo to you Pharisees, because you tithe minte and revve and euery herbe: and passe ouer iudgement and the charitie of God. but these things you ought to haue done, and not to omit those.

43Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and salutations in the marketplace. Vvo to you Pharisees, because you loue the first chaires in the synagogs, and salutations in the market-place.Væ vobis, pharisæis, quia diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis, et salutationes in foro. 44Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not: and men that walk over are not aware. Vvo to you, because you are as monuments that appeare not, and men vvalking ouer, are not vvare.Væ vobis, quia estis ut monumenta, quæ non apparent, et homines ambulantes supra, nesciunt. 45And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also. And one of the Lavvyers ansvvering saith to him, Maister, in saying these things, thou speakest to our reproche also. 46But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers. But he said, Vvo to you Lavvyers also: because you lode men vvith burdens which they can not beare, and your selues touch not the packes vvith one of your fingers. At ille ait: Et vobis legisperitis væ: quia oneratis homines oneribus, quæ portare non possunt, et ipsi uno digito vestro non tangitis sarcinas. 47Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them. Wo to you that build the monumēts of the Prophets: and your fathers did kil them.Væ vobis, qui ædificatis monumenta prophetarum: patres autem vestri occiderunt illos. 48Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers. For they indeed killed them: and you build their sepulchres. Surely you doe testifie that you consent to the vvorkes of your fathers: because they in deede did kil them, and you build their sepulchres.Profecto testificamini quod consentitis operibus patrum vestrorum: quoniam ipsi quidem eos occiderunt, vos autem ædificatis eorum sepulchra.

49For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles: and some of them they will kill and persecute. For this cause the vvisedō also of God said, I vvil send to them Prophets and Apostles, and of them they vvil kil and persecute.Propterea et sapientia Dei dixit: Mittam ad illos prophetas, et apostolos, et ex illis occident, et persequentur: 50That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,Affinchè a questa generazione si domandi conto del sangue di tutti i profeti, sparso dalla creazione del mondo in poi:that the bloud of al the Prophets that vvas shed from the making of the vvorld, may be required of this generation,ut inquiratur sanguis omnium prophetarum, qui effusus est a constitutione mundi a generatione ista, 51From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea I say to you: It shall be required of this generation. Certamente vi dico, ne sarà domandato conto a questa generazione.from the bloud of Abel vnto the bloud of Zacharie that vvas slaine betvvene the altar and the temple. Yea I say to you, it shal be required of this generation.a sanguine Abel, usque ad sanguinem Zachariæ, qui periit inter altare et ædem. Ita dico vobis, requiretur ab hac generatione. 52Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered in: and those that were entering in, you have hindered. Vho to you Lavvyers, because you haue taken avvay the key of knovvledge: your selues haue not entred, and those that did enter you haue prohibited.Væ vobis, legisperitis, quia tulistis clavem scientiæ: ipsi non introistis, et eos qui introibant, prohibuistis. 53And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him and to oppress his mouth about many things,E mentre tali cose diceva loro, i Farisei, e i dottori della legge cominciarono a opporsegli fortemente, e a sopraffarlo con molte questioni,And vvhen he said these things to them, the Pharisees and the Lavvyers began vehemently to vrge him, and to stoppe his mouth about many things,Cum autem hæc ad illos diceret, cœperunt pharisæi et legisperiti graviter insistere, et os ejus opprimere de multis, 54Lying in wait for him and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.Tendendogli insidie, e cercando di cavargli di bocca qualche cosa, onde accusarlo.lying in waite for him, & seeking to catch some thing of his mouth, that they might accuse him.insidiantes ei, et quærentes aliquid capere de ore ejus, ut accusarent eum.
