A continuation of the sermon on the mount.

1Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven. TAKE good heede that you doe not your iustice before men, to be seen of them: otherwise reward you shall not haue with your father which is in heauen. 2Therefore when thou dost an alms-deed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.Quando adunque farai limosina, non sonar la tromba davanti a te, come fanno gli ipocriti nelle sinagoghe, e nelle piazze per essere onorati dagli uomini: vi dico in verità, che costoro hanno già ricevuto la loro mercede,Therfore when thou doest an almes-deede, sound not a trompet before thee, as the hypocrites doe in the Synagogues and in the streetes, that they may be honoured of men: Amen I say to you, they haue receiued their reward. Amen dico vobis, receperunt mercedem suam. 3But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth. But when thou doest an almes-deede, let not thy left hand know vvhat thy right hand doeth:Te autem faciente eleemosynam, nesciat sinistra tua quid faciat dextera tua: 4That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.Dimodochè la tua limosina sia segreta: e il Padre tuo, che vede nel segreto, te ne darà egli la ricompensa.that thy almes-deede may be in secrete, and thy father vvhich seeth in secrete, vvil repay the.ut sit eleemosyna tua in abscondito, et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi. 5And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.E allorché orate, non fate come gl'ipocriti, i quali amano di stare a orare nelle sinagoghe, e a' capi delle strade, affine di essere osservati dagli uomini: in verità io vi dico, che hanno ricevuto la loro ricompensa. And vvhen ye pray, you shal not be as the hypocrites, that loue to stand & pray in the Synagogs and corners of the streetes, that they may be seen of men: Amen I say to you, they haue receiued their revvard.

6But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret, and thy father who seeth in secret will repay thee. But thou vvhen thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, & hauing shut the doore, pray to thy father in secrete: and thy father vvhich seeth in secrete, vvil repay thee. 7And when you are praying, speak not much, as the heathens. For they think that in their much speaking they may be heard. And vvhen you are praying, speake not much, as the heathen. For they thinke that in their much-speaking they may be heard. 8Be not you therefore like to them for your Father knoweth what is needful for you, before you ask him. Be not you therefore like to them, for your father knovveth vvhat is needeful for you, before you aske him.Nolite ergo assimilari eis: scit enim Pater vester, quid opus sit vobis, antequam petatis eum. 9Thus therefore shall you pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thus therefore shal you pray. OVR FATHER which art in heauen, sanctified be thy name.Sic ergo vos orabitis: Pater noster, qui es in cælis, / sanctificetur nomen tuum. 10Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Let thy Kingdom come. Thy wil be done, as in heauen, in earth also.Adveniat regnum tuum; / fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cælo et in terra. 11Give us this day our supersubstantial bread.Dacci oggi il nostro pane per sostentamento.Giue vs to day our supersubstential bread.Panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie, 12And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.E rimettici i nostri debiti, come noi pure li rimettiamo a chi ci è debitore. And forgiue vs our dettes, as we also forgiue our detters.et dimitte nobis debita nostra, / sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. 13And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. Amen.E non ci indurre in tentazione. Ma liberaci dal male. Così sia.And leade vs not into tentation. But deliuer vs from euil. Amen.Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, / sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

14For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. For if you vvil forgiue men their offenses, your heauenly father vvil forgiue you also your offenses. 15But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences. But if you vvil not forgiue men, neither vvil your father forgiue you your offenses. 16And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. And vvhen you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appeare vnto men to fast. Amen I say to you, that they haue receiued their revvard. Amen dico vobis, quia receperunt mercedem suam. 17But thou, when thou fastest anoint thy head, and wash thy face;Ma tu, quando digiuni, profumati la testa, e lavati la faccia; But thou vvhen thou doest fast, anoynte thy head, and vvash thy face:Tu autem, cum jejunas, unge caput tuum, et faciem tuam lava, 18That thou appear not to men to fast, but to thy Father who is in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret, will repay thee.Affinchè il tuo digiuno sia noto non agli uomini, ma al tuo Padre celeste, il quale sta nel segreto: e il Padre tuo, il quale vede in segreto, te ne darà la ricompensa.that thou appeare not to men to fast, but to thy father vvhich is in secrete: and thy father vvhich seeth in secrete, vvil repay thee.ne videaris hominibus jejunans, sed Patri tuo, qui est in abscondito: et Pater tuus, qui videt in abscondito, reddet tibi. 19Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth: where the rust, and moth consume, and where thieves break through, and steal. Heape not vp to your selues treasures on the earth: vvhere the rust & mothe do corrupt, & vvhere theeues digge through & steale.Nolite thesaurizare vobis thesauros in terra: ubi ærugo, et tinea demolitur: et ubi fures effodiunt, et furantur.

20But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven: where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through, nor steal. But heape vp to your selues treasures in heauen: vvhere neither the rust nor mothe doth corrupt, and vvhere theeues do not digge through not steale. 21For where thy treasure is, there is thy heart also.Imperciocché dove è il tuo tesoro, ivi è il tuo cuore. For vvhere thy treasure is, there is thy hart also. 22The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body shall be lightsome. The candel of thy body is thine eye. If thine eye be simple, thy vvhole body shal be lightsome.Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. Si oculus tuus fuerit simplex, totum corpus tuum lucidum erit. 23But if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkness: the darkness itself how great shall it be!Ma se il tuo occhio è difettoso, tutto il tuo corpo sarà ottenebrato. But if thine eye be naught: thy vvhole body shal be darkesome. If then the light that is in thee, be darkenes: the darkenes it self hovv great shal it be?Si autem oculus tuus fuerit nequam, totum corpus tuum tenebrosum erit. Si ergo lumen, quod in te est, tenebræ sunt: ipsæ tenebræ quantæ erunt ? 24No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. No man can serue tvvo masters. For either he vvil hate the one, and loue the other: or he vvil sustayne the one, and contemne the other. You cannot serue God and Mammon. 25Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment? Therfore I say to you, be not careful for your life vvhat you shal eate, neither for your body vvhat rayment you shal put on. Is not the life more then the meate: and the body more then the rayment?

26Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? Behold the foules of the ayre, that they sovv not, neither reape, nor gather into barnes: and your heauenly father feedeth them. Are not you much more of price then they? Nonne vos magis pluris estis illis ? 27And which of you by taking thought, can add to his stature one cubit? And vvhich of you by caring, can adde to his stature one cubite?Quis autem vestrum cogitans potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum ? 28And for raiment why are you solicitous? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin.E perché vi prendete pena pel vestito? And for rayment vvhy are you careful? Consider the lilies of the field hovv they grovv: they labour not, neither do they spinne. 29But I say to you, that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these. But I say to you, that neither Salomon in al his glorie vvas arayed as one of these. 30And if the grass of the field, which is to day, and to morrow is cast into the oven, God doth so clothe: how much more you, O ye of little faith? And if the grasse of the field, vvhich to day is, and to morovv is cast into the ouē, God doth so clothe: hovv much more you O ye of very smal fayth?Si autem fœnum agri, quod hodie est, et cras in clibanum mittitur, Deus sic vestit, quanto magis vos modicæ fidei ? 31Be not solicitous therefore, saying: What shall we eat: or what shall we drink, or wherewith shall we be clothed? Be not careful therefore, saying, vvhat shal vve eate, or vvhat shal vve drinke, or vvherevvith shal vve be couered?

32For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.Imperocché tali sono le cure de' gentili. Ora il vostro Padre sa, che di tutte queste cose avete bisogno.for al these thinges the Heathen do seeke after. For your father knovveth that you neede al these things.hæc enim omnia gentes inquirunt. Scit enim Pater vester, quia his omnibus indigetis. 33Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice, and all these things shall be added unto you. Seeke therefore first the Kingdom of God, & the iustice of him: and al these things shal be giuen you besides.Quærite ergo primum regnum Dei, et justitiam ejus: et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis. 34Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof. Be not careful therfore for the morovv. For the morovv day shal be careful for it self. sufficient for the day is the euil thereof.Nolite ergo solliciti esse in crastinum. Crastinus enim dies sollicitus erit sibi ipsi: sufficit diei malitia sua.
