Christ warns us against hypocrisy, the fear of the world and covetousness. He admonishes all to watch.

1And when great multitudes stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. AND when great multitudes stoode about him, so that they trode one an other, he began to say to his Disciples, Take good heede of the leauen of the Pharisees, vvhich is hypocrisie. 2For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed: nor hidden that shall not be known. For nothing is hid, that shal not be reuealed: nor secrete, that shal not be knovven. 3For whatsoever things you have spoken in darkness shall be published in the light: and that which you have spoken in the ear in the chambers shall be preached on the housetops.Conciossiachè quello, che avrete detto all'oscuro, si ridirà in piena luce: e quel, che avrete detto all'orecchio nelle camere, sarà propalato sopra i tetti. For the things that you haue said in darknesse, shal be said in the light: and that vvhich you haue spoken into the eare in the chambers, shal be preached in the house-toppes.Quoniam quæ in tenebris dixistis, in lumine dicentur: et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis, prædicabitur in tectis. 4And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body and after that have no more that they can do.A voi poi amici miei io dico: Non abbiate paura di coloro, che uccidono il corpo, e poi non possono far altro. And I say to you my frendes, Be not afraid of them that kil the body, and after this haue no more to doe. 5But I will shew you whom you shall fear: Fear ye him who, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you: Fear him. But I vvil shevv you vvhom ye shal feare: feare him vvho after he hath killed, hath povver to cast into hel. yea I say to you, feare him.

6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?Non è egli vero, che cinque passerotti si vendono due soldi, e pure un solo di questi non è dimenticaro da Dio?Are not fiue sparovves sold for tvvo farthings: and one of them is not forgotten before God?Nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipondio, et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo ? 7Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows. Yea the heares also of your head are al numbered. Feare not therfore: you are more vvorth then many sparovves.sed et capilli capitis vestri omnes numerati sunt. Nolite ergo timere: multis passeribus pluris estis vos. 8And I say to you: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God.Or io dico a voi, che chiunque avrà riconosciuto me dinanzi agli uomini, lo riconoscerà il Figliuolo dell'uomo dinanzi agli Angeli di Dio.And I say to you, Euery one that confesseth me before men, the Sonne of man also vvil confesse him before the Angels of God.Dico autem vobis: Omnis quicumque confessus fuerit me coram hominibus, et Filius hominis confitebitur illum coram angelis Dei: 9But he that shall deny me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.Chi poi me avrà rinnegato dinanzi agli uomini, sarà rinnegato dinanzi agli Angeli di Dio.But he that denieth me before men, shal be denied before the Angels of God.qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus, negabitur coram angelis Dei. 10And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but to him that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven.E chiunque avrà parlato contro il Figliuolo dell'uomo, gli sarà perdonato: ma a chi avrà bestemmiato contro lo Spirito santo, non sarà perdonato. And euery one that speaketh a vvord against the sonne of man, it shal be forgiuen him: but he that shal blaspheme against the holy Ghost, to him it shal not be forgiuen. 11And when they shall bring you into the synagogues and to magistrates and powers, be not solicitous how or what you shall answer, or what you shall say. And vvhen they shal bring you in to the synagogs and to magistrates and potestates, be not careful in vvhat maner, and vvhat you shal ansvver, or vvhat you shal say.

12For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what you must say.Imperocché lo Spirito santo vi insegnerà in quel punto stesso quello, che dir dobbiate. For the holy Ghost shal teach you in the very houre vvhat you must say.Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit vos in ipsa hora quid oporteat vos dicere. 13And one of the multitude said to him: Master, speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me.E uno della turba gli disse: Maestro, ordina a mio fratello, che mi dia la mia parte dell'eredità.And one of the multitude said to him, Maister, speake to my brother that he deuide the inheritaunce vvith me.Ait autem ei quidam de turba: Magister, dic fratri meo ut dividat mecum hæreditatem. 14But he said to him: Man, who hath appointed me judge or divider over you? But he said to him, Man, vvho hath appointed me iudge or deuider ouer you?At ille dixit illi: Homo, quis me constituit judicem, aut divisorem super vos ? 15And he said to them: Take heed and beware of all covetousness: for a man’s life doth not consist in the abundance of things which he possesseth.E disse loro: Guardatevi attentamente da ogni avarizia: imperocché non ista la vita d'alcuno nella ridondanza de' beni, che possiede. And he said to them, See and bevvare of al auarice: for not in any mans aboundance doth his life consist, of those things vvhich he possesseth. 16And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.E disse loro una similitudine: Un uomo ricco ebbe un'abbondante raccolta nelle sue tenute:And he spake a similitude to them, saying, A certaine riche mās field yelded plentie of fruites.Dixit autem similitudinem ad illos, dicens: Hominis cujusdam divitis uberes fructus ager attulit: 17And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?E andava discorrendo dentro disse: Che farò or, che non ho, dove ritirare la mia raccolta?and he thought vvithin him self, saying, Vvhat shal I doe, because I haue not vvhither to gather my fruites?et cogitabat intra se dicens: Quid faciam, quia non habeo quo congregam fructus meos ? 18And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns and will build greater: and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me and my goods.E disse: Farò così: demolirò i miei granai, e ne fabbricherò de' più grandi: e ivi ragunerò tutti i miei prodotti, e i miei beni,And he said, This vvil I doe, I vvil destroy my barnes, and vvil make greater: and thither vvil I gather al things that are grovven to me, and my goods,Et dixit: Hoc faciam: destruam horrea mea, et majora faciam: et illuc congregabo omnia quæ nata sunt mihi, et bona mea,

19And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years. Take thy rest: eat, drink, make good cheer.E dirò all'anima mia: O anima, tu hai messo da parte de' beni per moltissimi anni: riposati, mangia, bevi, datti bel tempo.and I vvil say to my soule, Soule, thou hast much goods laid vp for many yeres, take thy rest, eate, drinke, make good cheere.et dicam animæ meæ: Anima, habes multa bona posita in annos plurimos: requiesce, comede, bibe, epulare. 20But God said to him: Thou fool, this night do they require thy soul of thee. And whose shall those things be which thou hast provided? But God said to him, Thou foole, this night they require thy soule of thee: and the things that thou hast prouided, vvhose shal they be?Dixit autem illi Deus: Stulte, hac nocte animam tuam repetunt a te: quæ autem parasti, cujus erunt ? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.Così va per chi tesoreggia per se stesso, e non è ricco per Iddio. So is he that laieth vp treasure to him self, and is not riche to God vvard. 22And he said to his disciples: Therefore I say to you: Be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on.E disse a' suoi discepoli: Per questo dico a voi: Non vogliate mettervi in pena né del mangiare rispetto al vostro vivere, né del vestire riguardo al corpo. And he said to his Disciples, Therfore I say to you, Be not careful for your life, vvhat you shal eate: nor for your body, vvhat you shal doe on.Dixitque ad discipulos suos: Ideo dico vobis, nolite solliciti esse animæ vestræ quid manducetis, neque corpori quid induamini. 23The life is more than the meat: and the body is more than the raiment. The life is more then the meate, and the body is more then the raiment. 24Consider the ravens, for they sow not, neither do they reap, neither have they storehouse nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much are you more valuable than they? Consider the rauens, for they sovv not, neither doe they reape, vvhich neither haue storehouse not barne, and God feedeth them. Hovv much more are you of greater price then they? Quanto magis vos pluris estis illis ?

25And which of you by taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? And vvhich of you by caring can adde to his stature one cubite?Quis autem vestrum cogitando potest adjicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum ? 26If then ye be not able to do so much as the least thing, why are you solicitous for the rest? If then you be not able to doe so much as the least thing, for the rest vvhy are you careful?Si ergo neque quod minimum est potestis, quid de ceteris solliciti estis ? 27Consider the lilies, how they grow: they labour not, neither do they spin. But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. Consider the lilies hovv they grovv: they labour not, neither doe they spinne. But I say to you, Neither Salomon in al his glorie vvas araied as one of these. 28Now, if God clothe in this manner the grass that is to-day in the field and to-morrow is cast into the oven: how much more you, O ye of little faith? And if the grasse that to day is in the field, and to morovv is cast into the ouen, God so clotheth: hovv much more you O ye of litle faith!Si autem fœnum, quod hodie est in agro, et cras in clibanum mittitur, Deus sic vestit: quanto magis vos pusillæ fidei ? 29And seek not what you shall eat or what you shall drink: and be not lifted up on high. And you, doe not seeke vvhat you shal eate, or vvhat you shal drinke: and be not lifted vp on high.Et vos nolite quærere quid manducetis, aut quid bibatis: et nolite in sublime tolli: 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek. But your Father knoweth that you have need of these things. Ma il Padre vostro sa, che di queste cose avete bisogno, for al these things the nations of the vvorld doe seeke. but your father knovveth that you haue neede of these things.hæc enim omnia gentes mundi quærunt. Pater autem vester scit quoniam his indigetis.

31But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his justice: and all these things shall be added unto you. But seeke first the kingdom of God, and al these things shal be giuen you besides.Verumtamen quærite primum regnum Dei, et justitiam ejus: et hæc omnia adjicientur vobis. 32Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. Feare not litle flocke, for it hath pleased your father to giue you a kingdom.Nolite timere pusillus grex, quia complacuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum. 33Sell what you possess and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth. Sel the things that you possesse, and giue almes. Make to you purses that vveare not, treasure that vvasteth not, in heauen: vvhither the theefe approcheth not, neither doth the mothe corrupt. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.Imperocché dove è il vostro tesoro, ivi sarà pure il vostro cuore. For vvhere your treasure is, there vvil your hart be also. 35Let your loins be girt and lamps burning in your hands.Siano cinti i vostri lombi, e nelle mani vostre lampane accese.Let your loynes be girded, and candles burning in your handes,Sint lumbi vestri præcincti, et lucernæ ardentes in manibus vestris, 36And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.E fate voi, come coloro, che aspettano il loro padrone, quando torni da nozze, per aprirgli subito che giungerà, e picchierà alla porta.and you like to men expecting their lord, when he shal returne from the mariage: that vvhen he doth come and knocke, forthvvith they may open vnto him.et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis: ut, cum venerit et pulsaverit, confestim aperiant ei. 37Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you that he will gird himself and make them sit down to meat and passing will minister unto them. Blessed are those seruants, vvhom vvhen the Lord commeth, he shal finde vvatching. Amen I say to you, that he vvil gird him self, and make them sit dovvne, and passing vvil minister vnto them.

38And if he shall come in the second watch or come in the third watch and find them so, blessed are those servants.E se giugnerà alla seconda vigilia, e se giugnerà alla terza, e li troverà così (vigilanti) beati sono tali servi. And if he come in the second vvatch, and if in the third vvatch he come, and so finde, blessed are those seruants. 39But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open. And this knovv ye, that if the hous holder did knovv vvhat houre the theefe vvould come, he vvould vvatch verely, and vvould not suffer his house to be broken vp.Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam. 40Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not the Son of man will come.E voi state preparati: perché nell'ora, che meno pensate, verrà il figliuolo dell'uomo.Be you also ready: for at vvhat houre you thinke not, the Sonne of man vvil come. 41And Peter said to him: Lord, dost thou speak this parable to us, or likewise to all?E Pietro gli disse: Signore, questa parabola l'hai tu detta per noi, o per tutti? And Peter said to him, Lord, doest thou speake this parable to vs, or likevvise to al?Ait autem et Petrus: Domine, ad nos dicis hanc parabolam, an et ad omnes ? 42And the Lord said: Who thinkest thou is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?E il Signore disse: Chi credi tu, che sia il dispensatore fedele, e prudente, preposto dal padrone alla sua famiglia per dare al tempo debito a ciascheduno la sua misura di grano? And our Lord said, Vvho (thinkest thou) is a faithful stevvard and vvise, vvhom the lord appointeth ouer his familie, to giue them in season their measure of vvheate?Dixit autem Dominus: Quis, putas, est fidelis dispensator, et prudens, quem constituit dominus supra familiam suam, ut det illis in tempore tritici mensuram ? 43Blessed is that servant whom, when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing. Blessed is that seruant, vvhom vvhen the lord commeth, he shal finde so doing.

44Verily I say to you, he will set him over all that he possesseth. Verely I say to you, that ouer al things vvhich he possesseth, he shal appoint him.Vere dico vobis, quoniam supra omnia quæ possidet, constituet illum. 45But if that servant shall say in his heart: My lord is long a coming; and shall begin to strike the men-servants and maid-servants, and to eat and to drink and be drunk:Che se un tal servo dirà in cuor suo: Il padrone mio non vien così presto: e comincierà a battere i servi, e le serve, e a mangiare, e bere, e ubbriacarsi:But if that seruant say in his hart, My lord is long a comming: and shal begin to strike the seruants and handmaides, and eate and drinke, and be drunke:Quod si dixerit servus ille in corde suo: Moram facit dominus meus venire: et cœperit percutere servos, et ancillas, et edere, et bibere, et inebriari: 46The lord of that servant will come in the day that he hopeth not, and at the hour that he knoweth not: and shall separate him and shall appoint him his portion with unbelievers.Verrà il padrone di questo servo il dì, che meno egli l'aspetta, e nel punto, ch'egli non sa, e lo separerà, e lo manderà con (i servi) infedeli.the lord of that seruant shal come in a day that he hopeth not, and at an houre that he knovveth not, and shal deuide him, and shal appoint his portion vvith the infidels.veniet dominus servi illius in die qua non sperat, et hora qua nescit, et dividet eum, partemque ejus cum infidelibus ponet. 47And that servant, who knew the will of his lord and prepared not himself and did not according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. And that seruant that knevv the vvil of his lord, and prepared not him self, and did not according to his vvil: shal be beaten vvith many stripes.Ille autem servus qui cognovit voluntatem domini sui, et non præparavit, et non facit secundum voluntatem ejus, vapulabit multis: 48But he that knew not and did things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes. And unto whomsoever much is given, of him much shall be required: and to whom they have committed much, of him they will demand the more. But he that knevv not, and did things vvorthie of stripes: shal be beaten vvith fevv. And euery one to vvhom much vvas giuen, much shal be required of him: and to vvhom they committed much, more vvil they demaund of him.qui autem non cognovit, et fecit digna plagis, vapulabit paucis.

49I am come to cast fire on the earth. And what will I, but that it be kindled? I came to cast fire on the earth: and vvhat vvil I, but that it be kindled?Ignem veni mittere in terram, et quid volo nisi ut accendatur ? 50And I have a baptism wherewith I am to be baptized. And how am I straitened until it be accomplished? But I haue to be baptized with a baptisme: and hovv am I straitened vntil it be dispatched?Baptismo autem habeo baptizari: et quomodo coarctor usque dum perficiatur ? 51Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation.Pensate voi, ch'io sia venuto a portar pace sopra la terra; Non (la pace) vi dico, ma la divisione:Thinke you that I came to giue peace on the earth? No, I tel you, but separation.Putatis quia pacem veni dare in terram ? non, dico vobis, sed separationem: 52For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three. For there shal be from this time, fiue in one house deuided: three against tvvo, and tvvo against three.erunt enim ex hoc quinque in domo una divisi, tres in duos, et duo in tres 53The father shall be divided against the son and the son against his father: the mother against the daughter and the daughter against her mother: the mother-in-law against the daughter-in-law and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. There shal be deuided, the father against the sonne, and the sonne against his father, the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother, the mother in lavv against her daughter in lavv, and the daughter in lavv against her mother in lavv.dividentur: pater in filium, et filius in patrem suum, mater in filiam, et filia in matrem, socrus in nurum suam, et nurus in socrum suam. 54And he said also to the multitudes: When you see a cloud rising from the west, presently you say: A shower is coming. And so it happeneth.E diceva poi anche alle turbe: Quando avete veduto alzarsi dall'occaso una nuvola, subito dite: Vuol far temporale: e così succede. And he said also to the multitudes, When you see a cloude rising from the vvest, by and by you say, A shoure commeth, and so it commeth to passe:Dicebat autem et ad turbas: Cum videritis nubem orientem ab occasu, statim dicitis: Nimbus venit: et ita fit.

55And when ye see the south wind blow, you say: There will be heat. And it cometh to pass.E quando sentite soffiar lo scirocco, voi dite: Farà caldo: e succede così.and vvhen the south vvinde blovving, you say, That there vvil be heate: and it commeth to passe. 56You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time? Hypocrites, the face of the heauen and of the earth you haue skil to discerne: but this time hovv doe you not discerne?Hypocritæ ! faciem cæli et terræ nostis probare: hoc autem tempus quomodo non probatis ? 57And why, even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?E come non discernete anche da voi stessi quello, che è giusto? And vvhy of your selues also iudge you not that vvhich is iust?quid autem et a vobis ipsis non judicatis quod justum est ? 58And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison. And vvhen thou goest vvith thy aduersarie to the Prince, in the vvay endeuour to be deliuered from him: lest perhaps he dravv thee to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer thee to the exactour, and the exactour cast thee into prison. 59I say to thee, thou shalt not go out thence until thou pay the very last mite.Ti dico, che non uscirai di li, finché tu abbi pagate fin all'ultimo picciolo.I say to thee, thou shalt not goe out thence, vntil thou pay the very last mite.
