BORGIA, Carlo, of the Dukes of Gandia. - Cardinal, b. in Madrid on 30 Apr. 1663, d. at La Granja on 8 Aug. 1773. Third son of the ninth duke of Gandia and of Maria Ponce de León. Having obtained a doctorate in theology at Alcalá de Henares, he was first a canon of the cathedral of Toledo and then archdeacon in Madrid. He was chosen by Philip V, in 1702, as first almoner, chief chaplain and vicar general of the army, and in that capacity he accompanied the army in the Italian campaigns. In 1705 he took the place of Pietro Portocarrero in the archbishopric of Trebizond. In 1708 he was granted the title of patriarch of the Indies, and on 30 Nov. 1720 he was created, by Clement XI, cardinal of the title of St. Pudenziana. He came to Rome in 1721, but arrived too late to be able to take part in the Conclave of Innocent XI.
