BOSCH, HIERONYMUS (VAN AEKEN). - Dutch painter, b. at 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450, died there in 1516. His activity, documented from 1480 onward, was carried on mainly at 's-Hertogenbosch. His training, still uncertain, seems due more to the local Gothic tradition than to the art of the Eycks (or other painters, such as, for example, Ouwater) or to that of the "Master of the Virgo inter Virgines"; indeed, those peculiarities of color that contributed, together with the singularity of his choice and interpretation of subjects, to making the works of B. famous quite early, can be traced back, however vaguely, to these artists. Although foreign to Italian Renaissance art, his paintings entered Italy early (as well as Spain), where Guicciardini praised their nobility of invention and bizarre fantasy. Even in his religious representations there always remained something magical, indeed macabre. His taste for the mysterious had, after his death, a vast influence, not only on P. Brueghel the Elder (v.), but also on Herri met de Bles, J. Mandyn, G. Mostaert and others. Among his masterpieces mention should be made of the triptychs of Madrid, Lisbon, and the Escorial. In Italy there are paintings by his hand in the Doge's Palace in Venice. - See Pl. CXV.
