BURLERGH (Burley, Burlarus), Walter. - English Scholastic. The facts of his life are uncertain and contradictory. Born in 1275, he is considered a disciple of Scotus at Oxford. He taught in Paris, Oxford (F. Überweg) and Toulouse (M. Grabmann). He came to Italy twice, in 1327 and 1330, and was tutor to Edward III. He died after 1343 (E. Denifle). John of St. Anthony, along with many others, calls him a Franciscan; Alonso de Vargas, along with various writers, calls him an Augustinian; Denifle-Chatelain call him a canon at Evreux in 1342. B. fought the nominalism of Ockham and was called "doctor planus et perspicuus."
Published works: De vitiis et moribus philosophorum (Cologne 1472; critical edition Tübingen 1886), an interesting attempt at a history of philosophy from Thales to Seneca, printed and translated several times; Comment. in Ethicum Aristotelis (Venice 1481); Super artem veterem Porphyrii et Aristotelis expositio (ibid. 1481); De intentione et remissione formarum (ibid. 1496); Scriptum G. Burlei super libros Analyt. posteriorum (ibid. 1497); De materia et forma (Oxford 1500); Summa totius logicae (Venice 1508), etc. Among the unpublished works, notable are: De fluxu et refluxu maris anglici, formerly attributed to Bacon; De divisione scientiarum; De substantia orbis, etc.
